John Mazza: “Hard to think he’s not here”

Monmouth mainstay John Mazza passed away in May, and those closest to him remember him as a great dad, a generous guy, and a willing mentor.

John Mazza, who trains Monmouth Oaks winner Horologist, is 82. Owner, Cameron Beatty is 27. It’s a racing odd couple that’s a “perfect marriage.”

Upset! New Jersey-bred Horologist was up in a timely manner to win the Grade 3 Monmouth Oaks over favored Jaywalk Saturday.

John Mazza, 81 and a Monmouth Park lifer, will send out Horologist, who broke her maiden by 20 lengths, in Saturday’s Sorority Stakes.

Multiple stakes winner Stiffed looks to avenge her fourth-place finish last year in Monday’s Lady Secret Stakes.

Stiffed, the upset winner of the May 24 Monmouth Beach, aims to make it two straight in this afternoon’s Grade 3 Molly Pitcher at Monmouth Park.

Trainer John Mazza, 77, would like to slow down. But with a promising 2-year-old and 17 other horses i n the barn, there’s no time for that.

The first horses arrived at Monmouth Park on Saturday as the Jersey Shore track inched closer to its May 9 opening day.
