Delaware Park picks and analysis: October 12, 2023

Live racing at Delaware Park kicks off May 24 and runs through late October.

Once again this year, we will have Delaware Park picks and analysis for every day of live racing at the venerable track. Today’s card features eight races, and first post is 12:30 EDT.

Today’s carryovers: None

Race #1 Picks: 5-1-8-4

In this $6250 maiden claiming race for fillies and mares at one mile, #5 Beauty in Motion (8-5) sprinted on the grass in her debut. That race should have improved her endurance for running this route on the dirt. She has a good work since that turf race and may be ready for a good effort today. #1 Peace Pact (6-1) has run a couple good sprint races this now stretching out and if she wants the extra distance she could compete for a win today. #8 Exageradora (5-1) seems to be improving. She stumbled at the start last time and closed to finish third.

Race #2 Picks: 5-4-7-1

In this $6250 N2L claiming race for fillies and mares at six furlongs, #5 Providing (2-1) won her last start convincingly. She has gotten better every race since Michael Gorham took over training duties and we have her on top today. #4 Throwback (4-1) showed some speed last time and she should be in the mix again with these horses. #7 Win Or Cellar (8-1) will be making her second start at this class level and got up for third last time. Today’s field does not look strong and she should be in the mix again.

Race #3 Picks: 4-7-6-1

In this $20,000 maiden claiming race for two-year-old fillies at one mile and 70 yards, #4 Don’t Tell Kelly (2-1) flashed speed in a sprint and is now stretching out.  Trainer Edward Allard wins at 18% with an ROI of $2.41 in 22 attemptswhen going from a sprint to a route. #7 Forever Hopeful (3-1) is also making the switch from grass to dirt. She was facing maiden special company at Meadowlands. The class drop and surface switch might help her improve today. #6 Eastern Sunrise (4-1) is coming from Parx where she was facing a tougher group of horses.  The distance switch could help her improve.

Race #4 Picks: 2-4-8-1

In this $6250 claiming race at one mile and 70 yards, #2 Just Plain Ornery (5-2) is taking a class drop and has consistently run better speed figure than his foes. Winless this year but he looks like he has an edge today. #4 Ruthenian (4-1) has been running well recently with a win and a place in his last two. Based on recent form he looks like a contender today. #8 He’s On Fire (7-2) has shown early speed and is taking a class drop. He should be in the mix with this group of horses.

Race #5 Picks: 1-4-8-10

In this $16,000 maiden claiming race for fillies and mares at one mile and 70 yards on the turf, #1 Hot Bottom Girl (12-1) was showing speed in restricted maiden special turf races at Colonial Downs. If this filly can match those races against this group she has a shot for the top spot. #4 Tres Maria’s Dream (5-1) is a deep closer who had to be steadied and lacked room in last. If she can get a clean trip today she could get up for the win. #8 Palacsinta (6-1) had the lead but faded to third in her last two at this level. She should be in the mix again today.

Joe’s Notes

  • Jockey Daniel Centeno swept the early double with favorites Doin’ittherightway (9-5) and Zava (8-5)…
  • Trainer Webster Gayle earned his first career win, according to Equibase stats, with Tankinator (14-1) in the third…
  • The early Pick 5 returned over $8,000 with 14-1 Tankinator and 18-1 K’s Storm Ready the major contributors…

Race #6 Picks: 1-5-6-3

In this optional claiming/starter allowance race, #1 Take a Hint (3-2) has never run worse than second and has already beaten a couple of today’s foes.  Angel Arroyo will be on top the first time today and this gelding looks the best of this group. #5 Liberty Star (5-2) has been running well against tough company in Maryland.  Has a win and two place finishes in four tries at Delaware Park. She will be in the mix today.  #6 Street Hustle (6-1) has been running well and closed to finish second here last time out. Has a win and a place finish in his two races at Delaware.

Race #7 Picks: 14-12-7-11

In this optional claiming/first-level allowance race at 7 ½ furlongs on the turf, #14 Sagrada Ray (10-1) rallied to win his last race with an 81 speed figure. He has several good turf races this year and looks like a top competitor today. #12 Twist ’n Twirl (6-1) is improving on the turf and has two seconds in first-level allowance races. He was game in those races and has a good shot to win today. #7 Furiously (9-2) is a new gelding who has been off since January and will be getting Lasix for the first time. Trainer Graham Motion has won at 24% for an ROI of $2.88 in 67 attempts when bringing horses back from greater than a six-month layoff.

Race #8 Picks: 2-1-7-4

In this $5000 claiming race for fillies and mares at one mile and 70 yards, #2 Caged Pixie (4-1) is in decent form, which is more than we can say about many of the horses in this race. She has run third in her two last races and should compete for the win today. #1 Livin’ At the Bu (2-1) has not run since June when she won a race at Parx. She will be making her first start for Elisha Perez and if she is ready after the four-month break, she could compete for the win today. #7 Mikey’s Jewel (8-1) has some decent races at Penn National and could be in the mix.
