Delaware Park picks and analysis: June 28, 2023

Live racing at Delaware Park kicks off May 24 and runs through late October.

Once again this year, we will have Delaware Park picks and analysis for every day of live racing at the venerable track. Today’s card features eight races, and first post is 12:30 EDT.

Race #1 Picks: 1-4-2-6

In this $5000 claiming race at 5 ½ furlongs, #1 Taco Bean (4-1) will be making his second start since coming from Parx.  He got into a duel in his last race and just missed. He may get the lead all to himself today, which should allow him to get his fourth lifetime win. #4 Claw (2-1) Is coming from Mahoning Valley where he has been winless this year. He has shown some speed, and he is facing a very weak field today. He had a few speed figures in the 70s earlier this year, and if he can repeat those efforts, he will be a contender. #2 Crownedcountcristo (3-1) has had some good races in Maryland, including a win in an $8000 claimer, but excluding that effort, he has been dull recently.

Race #2 Picks: 6-7-4-2

In this $50,000 maiden claiming race for two-year-olds at five furlongs, #6 Copper Tax (7-5) just missed after surging near the wire in last. That experience will help this colt, and rider Jerion Barbosa also gained valuable experience from the debut.  #7 Mon Gateau (4-1) has been working well including a five -furlong work just one week ago. Jockey Xavier Perez is still winless at the meet but had 7 wins in 33 starts last year. #4 Taporical (10-1) has been working well and fills out our trifecta.

Race #3 Picks: 8-11-5-4

All races are off the turf. Picks are for anticipated dirt entrants.

Race #4 Picks: 6-2-5-1

In this $6250 maiden claiming race at 5 ½ furlongs, #6 El Gran Cuyaya (8-1) has been showing speed and fading against $10,000 claimers. Now moving from Parx to Delaware where his early speed will help. His early speed plus the class drop looks like a powerful combination. We think there will be value here, and we have him on top. #2 Cape Cod Summer (3-1) tried the turf in his first Delaware outing and did not like it.  Now back to the dirt where he ran well in Tampa in April. The grass route on June 1 will help his fitness.  #5 Preston Murray (6-1) was rounding into form at Gulfstream before getting distanced in his most recent race. Now running his second race after the layoff, and the drop in class could wake him up.

Race #5 Picks: 7-4-3-5

All races are off the turf. Picks are for anticipated dirt entrants.

Joe’s Notes

  • Off the turf again for Wednesday
  • Don’t know if it’ll last, but jockey Jaime Rodriguez is doing something pretty remarkable at the moment: he tops the rider standings at both Delaware and Laurel. At Delaware his 15 wins are four more than Daniel Centeno has…

Race #6 Picks: 3-1-2-4

In this #38,500 first-level allowance at one mile, #3 Phileas Fogg (7-2) is making the jump up after winning his debut impressively at Fair Grounds. Since that win he has been working well, and trainer Michael Stidham wins at 29% in layoffs of 180 days or more. There aren’t any monsters in here, and we think he will improve in his three -year-old season.  #1 Conspiracy Fact (9-5) got passed in the stretch last time when he went off at 1-5 odds. He had faded in the stretch in his last three starts. Still, his speed figures indicate he should be very competitive with his group. #2 Candy for Carmel (5-2) is moving back to the dirt after two turf starts. He won three straight on the dirt earlier this year at Park.

Race #7 Picks: 7-3-9-8

All races are off the turf. Picks are for anticipated dirt entrants.

Race #8 Picks: 3-1-6-5

In this $6250 N2L claiming race for fillies and mares at six furlongs, #3 One Pair of Hands (2-1) will be making her second try at this level after pressing the winner and running second in his last. If she can repeat that race, she may have enough to win today. #1 Shelley’s Song (6-1) has shown some ability to run in two of her first four races. Her good form may be enough to make her competitive in this event, which lacks any speedy opposition. #6 Suzy Q the Queen (4-1) has been in the top three in nine of her 17 lifetime races.
