Delaware Park picks and analysis: June 29, 2023

Live racing at Delaware Park kicks off May 24 and runs through late October.

Once again this year, we will have Delaware Park picks and analysis for every day of live racing at the venerable track. Today’s card features eight races, and first post is 12:30 EDT.

Race #1 Picks: 6-5-4-3

In this $12,500 maiden claiming race at six furlongs, #6 Vegas Playboy (9-5) ran evenly at this level at Monmouth in last try. He seems to be rounding into form and is trained by Gregg Sacco with Paco Lopez, who is the leading jockey at Monmouth, aboard. He should leave the maiden ranks today.  #5 Austin From Boston (5-2) made his debut here at Delaware last in a $25,000 maiden claimer and ran evenly. Now dropping down and trainer Jane Cibelli wins at 24% in 17 starts with maiden second-time starters. #4 Elusive Image (8-1) is dropping in class and could find his way into the trifecta. Had some decent races last year.

Race #2 Picks: 3-1-7-6

This $10,000 N2L claiming race for filles and mares at one mile and 70 yards is full of plodders, and #3 Ladyness (4-1) will probably inherit the lead by default. She had some good races at Tampa earlier this year, and this will be her third start for Juan Arriagada. She may have found a spot that is soft enough for her to prevail. #1 Qia (8-1) did not like the turf and is now returning to dirt. She may have a hidden class edge over some others here, and we expect a big run today. #7 Voodoo Mama Juju (3-1) was running against tougher at Laurel. Now dropping down to a more realistic level and adding blinkers. She will try to repeat her race in February when she left the maiden ranks.

Race #3 Picks: 4-8-1-6

All races are off the turf. Picks are for anticipated dirt entrants.

Race #4 Picks: 7-2-8-6

In the $6250 claiming race at six furlongs, #7 Onehandsomedude (6-1) Is coming back from a nine-month break. He showed some ability last year and seldom runs a bad race. The layoff is a concern, but he is one of the few horses in this race that has shown any consistency. #2 Seeing Red (5-1) showed early speed in last but could not hold on against the favorite and he ran second. He will go for the lead again today and try to hold on against the closers. #8 Rascally Rebel (9-2) is coming from Maryland and dropping to $6250 for the first time. He could be a factor with this group.

Race #5 Picks: 4-3-7-13

All races are off the turf. Picks are for anticipated dirt entrants.

Joe’s Notes

  • Off the turf again for Wednesday
  • Jockey John Hiraldo won a pair Thursday and now has seven wins at the meet. Kevin Gomez won once and is alone in third in the standings with 10 wins…

Race #6 Picks: 1-5-4-6

In this allowance/optional claiming race at 5 ½ furlongs, #1 St Andrews (3-2) won while under pressure here at Delaware on his first after being claimed at Oaklawn, running an 85 speed figure. That was an impressive race that will make him hard to beat if he can duplicate it. Trainer Greg Compton wins at a 25% clip for a $2.83 ROI when going for two in a row. #5 Liberty Star (3-1) won and was claimed last time out. Looking to continue that good form. This gelding is a consistent runner and should be in the thick of things. #4 Touchdown Montage (7-2) won a maiden race at Charles Town for hot trainer Brittany Russell. This looks like a good fit for him, and he is a contender.

Race #7 Picks: 4-3-5-1

All races are off the turf. Picks are for anticipated dirt entrants.

Race #8 Picks: 5-1-2-6

In this $38,000 maiden race for filles and mares at 5 ½ furlongs, #5 Iced Mocha (5-2) has a very good workout line with a bullet five-furlong workout. This colt was purchased for $120,000. He looks to be the class of this field. #1 Three Carats (9-2) has been away for ten months but has been working very well and has already shown he can hold his own in a maiden race. He looks like a contender today. #2 Eldari (7-2) is a first-time starter for Brittany Russell. This colt has a nice workout line, including a five-furlong work. He looks primed for a big run.
