Second Fasig-Tipton Midlantic 2yo sale is Wednesday

Tomorrow’s brief Fasig-Tipton Midlantic two-year-olds in training sale – no, not that one, this other one – kicks off at 3:00 p.m. at the sales pavilion in Timonium.

After outs, 85 hips are scheduled to go through the ring.

That roster includes a pretty good helping of Maryland-breds and a smattering of horses bred in other Mid-Atlantic states. Kentucky dominates the list, with 39 of the 85 remaining hips bred there. There are 17 Maryland-breds, second-most of any state, to go with five Pennsylvania-breds and a single Virginia-bred.

Among sires, Practical Joke, Good Samaritan, Catalina Cruiser, and Audible have three hips each. A number of sires, including top national names like Violence, Uncle Mo, and Flatter have two hips each on offer.

“There are some nice opportunities in this catalogue, which has strong sire power and a variety of state-bred programs represented from both the Midlantic region and beyond,” said Paget Bennett, Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Director of Sales, in a release.

“This sale should prove advantageous for buyers as it is one of the few auctions in which they can evaluate a two-year-old’s performance over a dirt surface.  The late June date also allows buyers to send their purchases straight to the racetrack from the sale.”

Of the 85 hips, all but 10 breezed an eighth of a mile during the Tuesday breeze show. Seven others breezed a quarter-mile and three galloped.

Five of the hips that went a furlong did so in 10 seconds flat, the fastest time recorded. Of those breezing a quarter, the fastest was Hip 47, a Kantharos filly who zipped the distance in 20 4/5 seconds, the only horse to break 21. She is being consigned by Crane Thoroughbred Services as agent.

The sale kicks off with a Kentucky-bred daughter of Audible and concludes with a pair of Maryland-breds, a Tapwrit filly and a Midnight Storm filly. It marks the first time in a number of years that Fasig-Tipton will hold a second regional two-year-old sale; its May sale is among the top Thoroughbred sales in the nation.
