Live racing at Delaware Park kicks off May 24 and runs through late October.

Once again this year, we will have Delaware Park picks and analysis for every day of live racing at the venerable track. Today’s card features eight races, and first post is 12:30 EDT.

Today’s carryovers: Early Pick 5, $8,594

Race # 1 Picks: 4-1-2-6

In this optional claiming/starter allowance race for fillies and at one mile and 70 yards #4 Six the Hard Way (8-1) has been facing tough competition. This will be the weakest field she has faced in a long time.  The class drop could put her in position to win. #1 Patty Cakes (9-5) is one of two Jamie Ness trained horses in this race. She is a very consistent filly and seldom runs a bad race. She should be in the mix today. #2 Indy Again (9-5) is the other Jamie Ness trained horse in this race. She won her last two in races which were taken off the turf and she fits well with this group.

Race #2 Picks: 7-6-1-5

In this $38,000 Maiden Special Race at one mile #7 Working Man (8-1) is a First-Time-Starter trained by James Lawrence. This horse has put in a lot of long workouts including several five-furlong works and a six-furlong workout. We could not find another horse we had confidence in, so we are putting this first timer on top. #6 Life On the Nile (4-1) has been running against tough competition at Monmouth and coming up a little short. He did show speed In those races and should be very competitive with this group. #1 Champagne Juan (3-1) has not raced since February but he has been working well and Christophe Clement has won at 24% in 87 attempts with horses that have not raced in over 180 days.

Race #3 Picks: 8-1-3-4

In this optional claiming/starter allowance race for fillies and mares at five and a half furlongs #8 Liking it Twisted (9-2) is very consistent. She won her last race and has 3 wins and 2 place finishes in 9 races at Delaware Park. We have her on top.  #1 Kashan (5-2) won her last three at Monmouth and comes to Delaware in excellent form. She looks well placed today and should be considered. #3 Protomagic (7-2) is another horse that has been running well recently and should to be in the mix today.

Race #4 Picks: 3-6-1-10

This maiden claimer has been taken off the turf and will be run on the main track at five furlongs.

Race #5 Picks: 4-5-6-2

In this $38,500 N2L second level allowance race for fillies and mares at five and a half furlongs #4 Toot Your Horn (8-1) won impressively in her debut and then tried the turf for two races with poor results. Now coming back to the dirt which seems to be her preferred surface. Trainer Patrick McBurney has won at 21% in 24 attempts when switching from Turf to Dirt. #5 Smoochinwithcindy (5-2) Won a Maiden Special race at Charles Town and then had a pretty good race at Timonium. He should improve in his third start and looks like a contender. #6 Delta Char (3-1) has raced well on the grass and ran well in a couple of races which were taken off the grass. In good form and should be considered.

Joe’s Notes

  • Favored Ringy Dingy rallied from well out of it to win the White Clay Creek Stakes for 2yo fillies by almost seven lengths under Katie Davis…
  • In a raggedly run amateur rider race (race 4), two horses were disqualified for bumping rivals; one horse fell but walked off; and another horse lost his rider.

Race #6 Picks: 11-10-1-8

This claiming race has been taken off the turf and will be run at 1 mile 70 yards on the main track.

Race #7 Picks: 9-8-1-4

In the $100,000 Rocky Run Stakes for two-year-olds at one mile it’s hard to ignore #9 Copper Tax (5-2). He already has three convincing wins at Delaware Park and the last two were with speed figures of 76 and 78 respectively. He looks like he won’t mind going a mile. Gary Capuano is having a very good meet and we have this colt on top. #8 Crazy Moon (6-1) had problems in the Sapling when he was bumped at the start but prior to that he was sharp winning a maiden Special at Saratoga. He should be in the mix. #1 Frankie’s Empire (10-1) Ran third in the Sapling before winning an optional claiming race here at Delaware. He is improving and could be sitting on a big race. One to consider.

Race #8 Picks: 3-9-2-7

In this $6250 N2L Claiming race at six furlongs #3 Onehandsomedude (8-1) is making only his third start of the year. Today will be his second race back since a layoff and he showed early speed a couple weeks ago. We think he will improve today and we have him on top. #9 Tapio (7-2) has back class and this will be his first time on the dirt at this class level. He may have a slight class advantage and could surprise today. #2 River Full (5-2) left the maiden ranks in last and will be going for two straight. One of the few horses in this race in decent form.
