Delaware Park picks and analysis: October 13, 2023

Live racing at Delaware Park kicks off May 24 and runs through late October.

Once again this year, we will have Delaware Park picks and analysis for every day of live racing at the venerable track. Today’s card features eight races, and first post is 12:30 EDT.

Today’s carryovers: None

In this optional claiming/starter allowance race at one mile and 70 yards, #1 Mr Jack (4-1) threw in a clunker in last but prior to that race he had four good races. He will be making his debut at Delaware and is our top choice. #6 Portos (5-2) has been facing tough competition at Monmouth and in New York.  He ran second in the $100,000 Precious Passion Stakes which was taken off the turf. Today’s race might be too short for him as he is 0 for 5 at this distance. #3 Roan Burgundy (6-1) won a six-furlong sprint in last and looks like he may want more distance. One to consider.

Race #2 Picks: 3-6-5-2

In this $40,000 claiming race for two-year-olds at 5 ½ furlongs, #3 Sir Mi Tolee (7-2) is a first time starter for Gerald Bennett. This colt has been working very well and Bennett does well with two-year-olds winning at 23% in 39 tries.  #6 Silverbullettwenty (5-2) showed some life in his debut running second. He has been away since June, but has been working well recently and should be considered. #5 In the Dance (9-2) ran second in his debut race at Timonium before struggling at Laurel in most recent race. He should improve in his third race and should be in the mix.

Race #3 Picks: 6-4-10-5

In this $5000 claiming race at one mile and 70 yards, #6 Salty Heir (5-2) has a few recent good races against better company and has won three of six races lifetime at Delaware Park. Has three wins in 2023 and we have him on top today #4 Off the Meds (8-1) will be making his first start for Juan Avila off the claim. Adding Blinkers and making his second start at Delaware Park. We think he will be in the mix today. #10 Melina’s Dream (10-1) has been running well against some of the other horses in this race. One to consider.

Race #4 Picks: 12-13-6-5

In this $16,000 maiden claiming race at one mile and 70 yards on the turf, #12 Inbound (9-2) was favored in a maiden special race here last month but ran evenly. Now dropping to $16,000 claimers and looks good against this group. Trainer Richard Hendriks will be going for his first win of the meet after 19 attempts. If #13 Fleets Bay (7-2) draws in he has a shot today. He has been running well at Colonial and Laurel and fits well with this group. #6 Lapinski Union (8-1) flashed some early speed with Maiden Special horses and Canterbury and could surprise today.

Race #5 Picks: 6-2-5-8 In this optional claiming/starter allowance race for two-year-olds at 5 ½ furlongs, #6 Bati King (9-2) won his debut effort and returned several months later and showed early speed in an optional claiming race. He should improve in his second race back off the layoff. This looks like a good spot and we have him on top. #2 Yahoo Omar (8-1) won his debut race convincingly and then tried a Delaware Certified Allowance race. He struggled in that race but is facing less competition today and should improve. #5 Jesus’ Dream (8-1) won a maiden claiming race at Parx 10 days ago and is in good form.

Joe’s Notes

  • Jockey Carol Cedeno won three on Thursday, while Kevin Gomez won a pair…
  • Two of Cedeno’s wins were for trainer Chelsey Moysey, who scored with Run Poppy (5-1) and April Fools Andy (7-1)…

Race #6 Picks: 5-11-13-10

In this optional claiming/first level allowance race for fillies and mares at 7 ½ furlongs on the turf, #5 Blonde Samaritan (5-1) has been in very good form and has been successful on the Delaware Park turf. She has been improving in every race and we have her on top today. #11 Classic Vinyl (7-2) ran third while facing much tougher at Colonial Downs in last. She ran a 75 speed figure in that race and if she repeats that effort she will compete for the win today. #13 Perfectly Golden (8-1) will be making her first start for Gregory Sacco after the claim. She was in very good form at Parx and Laurel and Sacco has won at 23% rate on first race after a claim.

Race #7 Picks: 1-9-5-4

In the $100,000 White Clay Creek Stakes for two-year-old fillies at one mile, #1 Peignor (9-2) won a maiden special convincingly at Ellis Park. This filly is improving and will likely be the one the others are chasing. Delaware Park favors speed, which this filly has, and we have her on top. #9 Ringy Dingy (7-2) ran evenly in her debut race at Saratogaand then won easily at Aqueduct with a hefty 74 speed figure. That win was at 6 ½ furlongs and she will be stretching out to a mile today. If she wants the extra distance she will be dangerous.  #5 Dewey Doit (8-1) has won both her starts at Parx and is another filly that’s improving. She is also stretching out and may want the extra distance.

Race #8 Picks: 1-2-8-7

In this $6250 maiden claiming Race at one mile, #1 Unxpected Tiger (4-1) just missed when dropping to this level last time out. If he repeats that race he has a chance to win today. #2 O T C Wiz (7-2) has been away since June and is dropping in class. He has been working well and Brittany Russell wins at 31% when brining horses back from a 61-180-day layoff. #8 Practicallymine (6-1) had some good races at the $10,000 claiming level and the class drop could put her in the mix.
