Delaware Park picks and analysis: September 1, 2023

Live racing at Delaware Park kicks off May 24 and runs through late October.

Once again this year, we will have Delaware Park picks and analysis for every day of live racing at the venerable track. Today’s card features eight races, and first post is 12:30 EDT.

Today’s carryovers: None

Race #1 Picks: 2-8-6-7

In this $16,000 maiden claiming race for two-year-olds at 5 ½ furlongs, #2 Miracle Trip (4-1) showed some early speed at Monmouth. Now he is coming to Delaware, adding blinkers, and dropping in class. Jose D’Angelo is a very solid trainer and we have this colt on top today. #8 Killargue Blessed (8-1) is a first-time starter for Andy Simoff. He has been working well and Simoff has won at 29% in 14 starts when debuting maiden claimers. #6 Jiggery Pokery (5-2) is making the move down from maiden special to maiden claiming which might wake him up.

Race #2 Picks: 4-5-3-1

In this $6250 N2L claiming race at 5 1/2 furlongs, #4 Princely God (7-2) has been flashing speed since leaving the maiden ranks and is now dropping and should compete well here. He should be able to control the pace and we have him on top. #5 Touch Code (2-1) just missed in his first try at Delaware. If he repeats that performance, he has a shot to win today. #3 Stellwagen Banker (5-2) rallied to just miss in his first attempt at this level. He will be running late again and could get up for the victory.

Race #3 Picks: 3-2-7-5

In this $34,000 maiden race for auction two-year-old fillies at 5 1/2 furlongs, #3 Rapid Ruby (2-1) has some racing experience under her belt and is now facing horses that were purchased at auction. She showed some speed in her races and we have her on top today. #2 Awesome Glo (6-1) has a nice workout tab including two workouts of five furlongs. Sometimes for first time starters the total furlongs worked is more important than the times, and this filly has some furlongs under her belt. #7 Pure Magic Girl (10-1) also has a long string of workouts that might help her endurance.

Race #4 Picks: 8-2-1-6

In this $16,000 claiming race for fillies and mares at one mile on the turf, #8 Tak E Lady (10-1) has been knocking on the door this year, but hasn’t quite been able to win. She isn’t facing any tough competition in this race and this might be her day.  #2 Bramble Bush (3-1) has been closing fast but running out of track before she can get up for the win. She will have a little more ground today in this one-mile event. #1 Una Luna (4-1) will be making her second start for Anthony Pecoraro and moving back to the turf. We should see some improvement over her last effort.

Race #5 Picks: 1-5-7-8

In this optional claiming/starter allowance race at one mile and 70 yards, there is lots of early speed, so we are going to take a shot with a closer. #1 Miracle Silver (15-1) is a slow starter but usually gets rolling on the far turn. There is going to be a lot speed up front and this horse will take advantage if the speed falters. #5 Screen Saver (7-5) is coming from Parx, where he won his last three. He will look to press the pace and win late. A top contender. #7 Instigated (2-1) will be making his first start for Chelsey Moysey. He has been racing well since moving to Delaware with two wins and two second-place finishes in four starts. One to consider.

Joe’s Notes

  • Dazzling debut for Just Great, who won a Delaware certified allowance for 2yo fillies by nearly 14 lengths for trainer Phil Capuano and owner Lou Ulman…
  • Kevin Gomez had a riding triple and is alone in second, four wins behind meet leader Jaime Rodriguez..

Race #6 Picks: 3-6-8-9

In this optional claiming/starter allowance race for fillies and mares at 7 ½ furlongs on the turf, #3 Golden Heart (3-1) has been running very well on the turf this year, including a win at this distance here back in July. Gary Capuano is having a very solid meet, and we have this filly on top. #6 Fearless Kristie (8-1) won a turf route at Monmouth in her last race to leave the maiden ranks. Jairo Rendon will be aboard again today, and this filly should improve and be a competitor. #8 Louise Brooks (10-1) won last time and appears to be rounding into form and should be in the mix again today.

Race #7 Picks: 2-5-6-4

In this $50,000 allowance race for Delaware certified two-year-olds 5 1/2 furlongs, #2 Copper Tax (1-1) has been away since June, when he won impressively in a maiden claiming race. He has been working consistently and looks like the one to beat today. #5 Midnight Story (3-1) won a state-bred maiden race in his debut at Monmouth. He should improve with that racing experience and looks like a top contender today. #6 Pack Plays (8-1) is another Monmouth shipper that won his debut race. Paco Lopez will take her to the front and let the others chase.

Race #8 Picks: 4-6-5-2

In this $10,000 maiden claiming race at six furlongs, #4 River Full (6-1) has been fading in routes and will switch to a sprint and is dropping to a level where he had a decent race last year. Given the softer field, we think he has a shot to come out on top. #6 Vegas Playboy (9-5) just missed last time after getting the lead. The 46 speed figure is the best of this group and he will have a chance to win if he can repeat that number. #5 El Gran Sebas (8-1) is a first time starter for Antonio Machado. His work tab looks good and it’s worth taking a shot in this race.
