On Fritchie day, a few to watch at a price

Saturday, February 18 brings us the latest renewal of the Grade 3 Barbara Fritchie Stakes and its companion, the Grade 3 General George. Those two races are joined by four other stakes, including a pair for sophomores that help kick off the road to Preakness weekend.

Are there some races where you might be able to take a bit of a swing? We think there are. Here are a few horses to watch at a price:

Race 3, Wide Country Stakes (3yo fillies)

#1 Gormley’s Gabriela (10-1) makes first start in the Lynn Cash and gets blinkers on… L Street Lady is the deserving favorite and hasn’t done anything wrong to date, but it feels like she may be overbet… With the presence of Chickieness and Stonewall Star, the pace might be lively, and that could help our choice, plus her experience going farther means she should be fit…

Race 4, Miracle Wood Stakes (3yo)

No question he’ll need to bring his “A” game, but #7 B West (8-1) had a major excuse in last. Midway up the backside, he lost his action, dropping far off the pace and losing all chance… He came running later, passing several to earn third. He’s yet to show he’s as good as morning line choice Prince of Jericho, but sophomores do jump up suddenly…

Race 6, John B. Campbell Stakes (4yo and up)

His last was a trainwreck, and his form tends to be in-and-out, but on best #8 Ain’t Da Beer Cold (12-1) could be right there with these. He ran really well two back, and perhaps last out was just a bounce. Drawn outside and going two turns hits him right between the eyes…

Race 9, Grade 3 General George (4yo and up)

The pace should be lively, which would be good news for #4 Yodel E. A. Who (10-1). He closed nicely last time out for second in the Fire Plug in a race that might be stronger than it seems. Other late runners likely entice more, and the 0-for-8 ledger at the trip is troubling, but hey, the price should be right…
