It may, as its website claims, be known for “a smile and an eighth.”
It may also be a little bit ragged and tumble-down these days, nearing, as it is, its 70th birthday.
But a week from today, Atlantic City Racecourse will kick off its ultra-brief 2013 meet: six days, six races a day, and nothing but grass racing.
But for those six days, Atlantic City turns back the clock to an earlier era of racing. Big crowds — from wizened handicappers to young families to college-age kids on a lark — pack the track apron and let loose lusty cheers when the horses turn for home.
The meet highlight comes on closing day, with the eighth running of the Tony Gatto Dream Big Stakes for three and up going five furlongs on the lawn.
