Charles Town jockeys and trainers to watch

Jockey Carlos Lopez and trainer Ronney Brown have enjoyed especially productive periods during the last three weeks at Charles Town Races, winning seven and eight races, respectively, to lead their peers in that category.

As the new racing week kicks off, here’s a quick look at who’s hot among trainers and jockeys. We looked at the last three weeks of racing at Charles Town and compared how often jockeys and trainers won to what their takeout-adjusted odds would have predicted. Jockeys must have made at least 10 starts to appear on the list, and trainers, more than five. Here’s what we found:

Carlos Lopez won with two mounts at Charles Town this past weekend to bring his mark in the last three weekends to seven wins from 17 starts. That’s 4.17 wins more than his odds would have predicted, a stellar 12.26 wins above expectations per 50 starts. His nearest pursuer these last few weeks in wins above expectations is Wesley Ho, whose four wins are 1.74 more than expected, good for 4.59 wins above expectations per 50 starts…

Others in the lead group by wins above expectations include Antonio Lopez (4.56 wins above expectations/50 starts), Maximo Chilo (3.83), and Fredy Peltroche (3.28)

The colony leader in wins over the last three weeks has been Arnaldo Bocachica, who posted nine wins from 41 starts. That, however, was 1.52 wins below expectations

Others exceeding expectations by more than two wins include Antonio Lopez (3-for-16, 4.67 wins above expectations per 50 starts), Javier Rivera (2-for-15, 2.66), and Wesley Ho (4-for-22, 2.50)…

Lopez has taken 26.1% of available purse money the last three weeks to lead the colony. His nearest competitors include Arnaldo Bocachica (20.9%), Larry Reynolds (19.5%), and Wesley Ho (18.6%)…

Twelve of 22 riders with at least 10 mounts in recent weeks have won less frequently than their odds would predict. That includes Gustavo Larrosa (6.74 wins fewer than expected per 50 starts), Marshall Mendez (4.85 fewer), Luis Batista (4.34), Abnel Bocachica (3.35), and Reshawn Latchman (2.18)…

Of the 22 riders to make at least 10 starts in the last three weeks, 19 won at least one race…
