Delaware Park picks and analysis: November 3, 2023

Live racing at Delaware Park kicks off May 24 and runs through late October.

Once again this year, we will have Delaware Park picks and analysis for every day of live racing at the venerable track. Today’s card features eight races, and first post is 12:30 EDT.

Today’s carryovers: None

Race #1 Picks: 1-2-6-3

In this $20,000 claiming race at one mile and 70 yards, #1 Chelonian (5-2) is coming from Parx where he was facing tougher competition. He is up for a $20,000 tag today and has a class advantage over most of his foes. We rate him on top today. #2 Mr Jack (7-2) was running well at Penn National until he ran poorly in his most recent race.  He took a break from racing after that race but has been working well.  We expect him to return to good form today. #6 Grand Pick (9-5) has been on a roll with two recent wins here at Delaware. In good form and he looks like a contender.

Race #2 Picks: 6-4-5-3

In this $10,000 claiming race for fillies and mares at six furlongs, #6 Waterworks (9-5) has been in good form now that she has found a level where she can be successful. She will be with the leaders coming down the stretch and has a shot to finish on top today. #4 Shesasuperfreak (5-2) is moving down the class ladder and is running for the meet’s leading trainer (Jamie Ness) and jockey (Jaime Rodriguez). This looks like a good spot for her and she looks like a top contender. #5 Lady Jean (6-1) won here in her last race and has three lifetime wins at this track. She is in good form and should be considered.

Race #3 Picks: 1-2-4-3

In this optional claiming/starter allowance race for fillies and mares at one mile, #1 Cuenca (6-1) is a speedster who has been running well at Penn National. Her regular Jockey Anthony Salgado will be on top today. She has enough speed to get to the front and Delaware Park favors frontrunners. We have her on top. #2 Carroll Girl (9-5) is a horse for the course with four wins in five attempts at Delaware Park.  She has won four of her last six and is a top contender. #4 Izzybella (9-2) is in good form and has shown she can run on turf or dirt. One to consider.

Race #4 Picks: 1-4-7-6

In this $16,000 claiming race at one mile and 70 yards, #1 Highway Bound (4-1) will be making his fourth start of the year and is moving down the claiming ladder. He faced tough horses here last year and is now at a level where he can be successful. We have him on top today. #4 Conspiracy Fact (2-1) ran well in a race after the claim by Juan Arriagada. He should improve in the second race with this trainer. He figures to be in the mix again today. #7 Stacks of Silver (6-1) has been facing tougher and could improve his position against this group.

Race #5 Picks: 4-1-2-6

In this $34,000 maiden special race for two-year-old fillies at 5 ½ furlongs, #4 Big Bolt (4-1) has the benefit of three races under her belt. She has a couple of decent races and that experience should help her today. We have this filly on top. #1 Celestial Express (3-2) ran a closing 4th in her debut race in New York. She posted a 47 Beyer figure in that race, and if she can repeat that figure, she will be very competitive today. #2 Gwen Stacy (8-1) is coming from Parx where she ran 4th on debut. Trainer Louis Linder has two wins in three attempts this year at Delaware Park, and this filly should improve today.

Joe’s Notes

  • Three riders combined to sweep the card, with Raul Mena and Alexander Crispin winning three each, while Carol Cedeno won two…
  • Trainers Michael Gorham and Brittany Russell are tied for second in the trainer standings with 25 wins apiece; Jamie Ness, with 60 wins, has that title sewn up…

Race #6 Picks: 3-1-4-5

In this $10,000 claiming race at six furlongs, #3 Striking Speed (5-2) will be making his second start for Wayne Potts. He was racing in New York and is now coming to Delaware. He had some good races earlier in the year and will be looking to return to that form. #1 Golden Juan (9-5) has two wins here at Delaware. He has early speed and could be dangerous if he gets free on the lead. #4 Senate Chamber (7-2) will be making his first start for Michael Gorham after the claim. Gorham has won at a 25% rate in 24 starts for a $3.27 ROI on first race after a claim.

Race #7 Picks: 6-5-1-2

In this optional claiming/starter allowance race at one mile, #6 Lookin At Roses (9-5) is extremely consistent. He has five wins this year and has won three of his last four. His speed figures look very competitive against this group and we have him on top. #5 Boss Logic (3-2) is also extremely consistent and is in excellent form. He has five wins in eight starts at Delaware and is a top contender. #1 Tycoon (10-1) has lots of early speed and will be pushing the pace early. One to consider.

Race #8 Picks: 2-4-3-1

In this optional claiming/starter allowance race at six furlongs, #2 Colonel Bowman (3-2) was running very well in New York before finishing second as the favorite at Delaware in his last race. That race was at five furlongs and will now go back to six furlongs, and we think he will be able to handle this field. #4 Head Or Tails (8-1) has been running well. He finished a nose behind Golden Candy in last, but we think he will able to turn the tables today. A contender. #3 Golden Candy (3-1) has not won this year but has been very competitive. He should be in the mix today.
