Delaware Park picks and analysis: October 28, 2023

Live racing at Delaware Park kicks off May 24 and runs through late October.

Once again this year, we will have Delaware Park picks and analysis for every day of live racing at the venerable track. Today’s card features eight races, and first post is 12:30 EDT.

Today’s carryovers: Early Pick 5, $15,050

Race #1 Picks: 4-1-2-6

In this $5000 claiming race for fillies and mares at one mile, #4 Chica Rabiosa (5-2) ran a few decent races this summer and will only carry 110 pounds today because apprentice jockey Andres Chavez will be up. This filly should be able to get the lead with this group, and we have her on top today. #1 Ms Boombastic (9-5) has been running on the turf and will now move back to dirt. She only has 2 wins in 31 races but is facing a weak field today and is dropping in class, which gives her a chance to win. #2 Caged Pixie (7-2) has not been able to break through with a win this year but had four wins last year and her speed figures look competitive with this field. One to consider.

Race #2 Picks: 5-2-4-1

In this $12,500 maiden claiming race for fillies and mares at six furlongs, #5 April’s Gold (7-2) will be making her second start for Lynn Ashby. She will be getting Lasix and will be moving from turf to dirt. We think there will be big improvement today. #2 Allie’s Halo (5-2) is improving and is facing a weak field today. If she can improve further, she will be in the mix today. #4 Destined to Dance (9-5) is a deep closer who will be passing tiring horses late. She has a shot if she has some pace to run at.

Race #3 Picks: 1-6-7-2

In this $8000 claiming race at six furlongs, #1 Sutton Valley (3-1) has been running well and had two wins here at Delaware this summer. He will be making his first start for Elliot Sullivan, who has won at 20% in 66 attempts on first race after a claim. #6 Classy Solution (8-1) has been in good form but tends to fade late. She always puts in a good effort and will be in the mix. #7 Pepe and Heywood (6-1) is another horse who usually puts in a good effort and could be a contender in this race.

Race #4 Picks: 6-2-5-3

In this $20,000 maiden claiming race for two-year-old fillies at 5 ½ furlongs, #6 Sweet Summer Love (10-1) has flashed early speed in previous races. She seems to be showing some improvement and looks like she has a shot today. #2 Bustin Time (3-1) is a first-time-starter who has a nice workout line. She has a sharp five-furlong workout on October 12 and could prevail today. #5 Chica Music (2-1) has showed speed on the turf at Colonial Downs and could be in the mix.

Race #5 Picks: 3-2-7-1

In this optional claiming/starter allowance race at six furlongs, #3 Sainthoodforbrian (3-1) has been running well this year and is taking a class drop today. Finished behind Take a Hint two back but got off to a poor start in that race. We think he will finish on top today. #2 Take a Hint (2-1) has been sharp since his first race and has never finished worse than third. He will be battling for the lead early and looks like a top contender. #7 No Confession (6-1) has been running well and has early speed.

Joe’s Notes

  • Jockeys Carol Cedeno and Keimar Trotman each won twice on the Friday card…
  • Favorites got shut out Friday, going 0-for-8, which triggered a $15,000+ carryover in the early Pick 5. The late Pick 5 paid $7,401 on a 50-cent wager, with just one person sussing it out…

Race #6 Picks: 2-8-6-4

In this $25,000 maiden claiming race for two-year-olds at six furlongs, #2 In the Dance (5-2) ran well last time out with a 62 speed rating. Now adding blinkers and taking a class drop and he looks tough against these. #8 Dalinar (7-2) ran a good race in his debut. He has been working well since that race and should improve today. This looks like a good spot and he looks like a contender. #6 Secret Saturday (6-1) ran evenly in his debut after getting off to a poor start.  He faced a couple of today’s foes in that race. He should improve in his second race. He fits well with this group.

Race #7 Picks: 9-7-4-2

In this first-level allowance/optional claiming race at six furlongs, #9 Run Poppy (6-1) has three wins in six attempts at Delaware Park this year. He won his last race with a stalking trip and posted a 77 speed figure. He appears to be peaking in form and we have him on top today. #7 Mr. Swagger (3-1) has been away since July when he faced much tougher at Belmont. He has been working very well since that race and should be in the mix today. #4 Bustin Loose (8-1) had some good races at Monmouth this summer and has been working well since his last race in August. One to consider.

Race #8Picks: 7-6-2-4

In this $12,500 maiden claiming race at one mile, #7 Bold Medication (6-5) is moving down the claiming ladder. He has not been able to leave the maiden ranks after 12 races but may have found a spot soft enough for him to do it today. We think he will prevail.  #6 Nieuwendyk (6-1) was not able to leave the maiden ranks in New York while facing tougher this year. Now making his second start at Delaware and appears to be in a good spot. #2 It’s Birdie Birdie (8-5) will be making his third start for Kelly Breen and should improve today.
