Delaware Park picks and analysis: October 27, 2023

Live racing at Delaware Park kicks off May 24 and runs through late October.

Once again this year, we will have Delaware Park picks and analysis for every day of live racing at the venerable track. Today’s card features eight races, and first post is 12:30 EDT.

Today’s carryovers: None

Race #1 Picks: 1-4-5-2

In this $7500 claiming race for fillies and mares at one mile, #1 Dia de Sol (2-1) has been in good form lately, winning two of her last three races. She has lots of early speed and looks like a top contender with this group. #4 Red Wine Time (3-1) is a deep closer who won going away last time out. If she can get some pace to run at today she could make a late charge and impact this race. #5 Viking Queen (8-1) will be making her first start for trainer Rodolfo Sanchez.  She had some good races in Maryland this year.

Race #2 Picks: 1-6-2-5

In this $15,000 claiming race for two-year-old fillies at six furlongs, #1 Bootsy’s Merlot (5-2) passed tiring horses in a $32,000 claiming race and is taking a class drop today. This filly seems to be improving. Trainer Raymond Ginter has won at 21% in 14 attempts with two-year-olds. #6 Insouciant (8-1) has been showing early speed against better horses and is taking a class drop today. She should show improvement.  #2 Eden’s Gigi (9-5) won a maiden race here two back, then found $28,000 claimers too tough and is moving down. She should improve today.

Race #3 Picks: 5-6-4-1

In this #16,000 maiden claiming race for two-year-olds at one mile, #5 Catalina Kid (1-1) rallied mildly in last and is now moving down the claiming ladder. He is facing a weak field today and should be able to handle this group. #6 The Honeyman (9-2) has shown some minor closing speed in recent races and could be in the mix. #4 Melody Win (9-2) was running in turf routes at Colonial Downs and will now try the dirt. The surface change could help him improve.

Race #4 Picks: 8-3-1-9

In this $6250 N2L claiming race at 5 1/2 furlongs, #8 Wild Time (4-1) was running well at Canterbury before struggling in his first race at Delaware Park. Now cutting back in distance and he should be more fit than he was last time. We have him on top. #3 Bet He’s Ready (3-1) will be making his first start for Robert Falcone after a decent race at Monmouth in September. Falcone has won at 30% in 73 races for a $2.56 ROI when racing a new trainee for the first time. #1 Our Ronny Alan (5-1) has not raced since June but is dropping in class and has shown speed with better horses in previous races.

Race #5 Picks: 4-5-1-3

In this $6250 claiming race at one mile and 70 yards, #4 Chris and Dave (4-1), is in very good form. He just missed last time out when he finished second by a neck in a key race where two starters won their next race. We like him for the win today. #5 Fast Break (2-1) has a lot of early speed. After winning two in a row at Monmouth he struggled here last time out. Now dropping in class and he looks like a contender today. #1 Camp Pendleton (6-1) won last time out and has some good races this year. One to consider.

Joe’s Notes

  • Jockey Kevin Gomez won three times and, with 54 wins at the meet, is six behind meet leader Jaime Rodriguez with six days of racing to go…
  • Trainer Rudy Sanchez-Salomon doubled up with two wins. His 15 victories at the meet are good for sixth in the standings…

Race #6 Picks: 7-5-2-3

In this $6250 claiming race at one mile, #7 Oiler (8-1), has been showing speed with better horses and is now taking a class drop. He may have a slight class advantage over this group and we have him on top. #5 The Bearrish One (2-1) is also dropping in class after running second last time. He fits well with this group and should be in the mix. #2 Citi Creek (4-1) has been struggling since Jose Ramirez took over training duties, but if he can return to his previous form he could be involved today.

Race #7 Picks: 5-8-4-6

In this optional claiming/starter allowance race at one mile, #5 Passage of Lines (2-1) is very consistent. He struggled at Laurel last time but has won both his races at Delaware Park running speed figures in the 80s. He is trained by the meet’s leading trainer in Jamie Ness and we have him on top today. #8 Winter’s Ghost (9-2) is another very consistent runner. He will lay just off the pace and look to pounce late. He has two wins and two seconds in four starts at Delaware. A top contender. #4 Sittin on Go (7-2) ran a closing third in his first race for David Jacobson in last. He needed that race and should improve today.

Race #8: Picks: 3-6-4-1

In this $20,000 N4L claiming race for fillies and mares at six furlongs, #3 Kingdom Queen (5-2) has been running in allowance and optional claiming races and has been running evenly in those. Now dropping to $20,000 claiming and may have a class advantage over this group. Her speed figures look competitive, and we have her on top. #6 Awesome Birdie (9-5) won her first race back after being away for a year. She ran a lifetime best Beyer figure in that race. If she can repeat that effort, she will be a top contender. #4 Awesome View (7-2) will be making her first start for Carlos Sepulveda. She has been in the mix in recent races and figures to be involved with the leaders again today.
