Delaware Park picks and analysis: October 6, 2023

Live racing at Delaware Park kicks off May 24 and runs through late October.

Once again this year, we will have Delaware Park picks and analysis for every day of live racing at the venerable track. Today’s card features eight races, and first post is 12:30 EDT.

Today’s carryovers: None

Race #1 Picks: 7-5-1-3

In this $5000 claiming race for fillies and mares at one mile, #7 Suiko (4-1) won his first race of the year in June but has not run well since that race. Now dropping back down to $5000 claimers and we think she will improve today. #5 Blind Sight (2-1) has run well at Delaware with a win and two seconds in three races. She is moving back to the dirt and dropping in class today. She looks like a contender. #1 Chalk Hill (3-1) will be making her second start after a short break, and she should improve. She has three wins in fourteen lifetime starts at Delaware.

Race #2 Picks: 5-1-8-10

In this $25,000 maiden claiming race for two-year-old fillies at 5 ½ furlongs, #5 Sofster (5-1) has shown some speed in both her races. Those two efforts should help her endurance. She looks well prepped for this race and we have her on top. #1 Navani (3-1) was in a three-horse photo for second last time out, albeit a mile behind winner Just Great. We think she will run well today. A contender. #8 Wilpic (8-1) has a race under her belt and has lots of long workouts. She should improve today and should be considered.

Race #3 Picks: 6-7-1-3

In this $12,500 claiming race for fillies and mares at one mile, #6 Collin’s Grey Lady (6-1) is coming from Parx where she was facing stiff competition. She showed early speed two races back in a route before trying a sprint. She should improve off those two races, and if she can get back to last year’s form, she has a good shot today.  #7 Grand Arrow (8-1) moved up to face tougher company after winning three straight. After finding that group a little too tough, she is now moving back down the class ladder and may have a slight class advantage over this group. #1 Lucky Lorraine (3-1) has been running well lately and should be in the mix again today.

Race #4 Picks: 4-2-3-1

In this $20,000 N2L claiming race for fillies and mares at five furlongs on the turf, #4 Moonshining (7-2) has been facing good competition at Colonial Downs and Meadowlands. She closed well in these races and may be able to pass this group in the deep stretch. We have this filly on top. #2 Snow Loves a Fight (9-2) was facing $50,000 claimers in New York. She has shown early speed and that speed could hold against this group. She looks like a competitor. #3 Lady Lancer (8-1) will be making her second turf start and dropping down to a level where she could be involved with the contenders in this race. One to consider.

Race #5 Picks: 5-2-3-1

In this optional claiming/starter allowance race at six furlongs, #5 Aristocratic (4-1) has not won this year in seven tries but has four seconds. This speed burner tends to fade late, but she might be able to hold on against this group. #2 Golden Juan (5-2) will be making his second start for Chelsey Moysey. The competition was a little too tough in his last outing, and he’s now moving down to a level where he can compete. #3 Drena’s Star (7-2) was closing and crossed the finish line together with three other horses in last. That was a good race and he has been in good form. One to consider.

Joe’s Notes

  • Bali Rolling Tide posted a 32-1 upset to kick off Thursday’s card, breaking his maiden in his eleventh career start for trainer Robert Werneth. Mario Fuentes was in the irons…
  • Jockey Vincent Cheminaud won two on the day, his first wins at Delaware in limited local action this meet…

Race #6 Picks: 10-13-12-5

In this $20,000 N2L claiming race for fillies and mares at one mile and 70 yards on the turf, #10 Istria (5-1) is coming from Parx where she was flashing speed on the turf but fading late. She is taking another class drop today and this could be the level where she can get to the winner’s circle. If #13 Cumberland Falls (15-1) draws in from the also eligibles, she has a shot. She will return to the grass where she was facing much tougher at Monmouth and New York. She looks like a contender today. #12 Marvelette (9-2) is another horse that has shown early speed on the turf and will be one of the horses the others are chasing.

Race #7 Picks: 2-5-7-4

In this optional claiming/second level allowance race for fillies and mares at one mile, #2 Hazardous Humor (4-1) is in excellent form. She won her first race under the training of Anthony Pecoraro with a 76 speed figure and ran well in her last three outings. She looks to be in a good position to win today. #5 Ragtime Belle (5-1) is another horse in very good form who won last time with her new trainer McLean Robertson after being away from him for one race. She has good speed figures and looks like a contender today. #7 Gamestonks (6-1) almost won at this level in last and should be considered in this spot.

Race #8 Picks: 5-7-2-3

In this $6250 N2L maiden claiming race at one mile, #5 Keranos (4-1) missed by a nose in last after being claimed by Pedro Nazario. He has a win and five seconds in eight starts this year. He looks like a top contender today.  #7 Wild Time (8-1) has been running well at Canterbury this year with three straight second-place finishes. If he repeats those races, he will be a top contender. #2 Country Miles (6-1) only has one win in 36 career starts, but dropping to this claiming level should put him in the mix today.
