Delaware Park picks and analysis: July 13, 2023

Live racing at Delaware Park kicks off May 24 and runs through late October.

Once again this year, we will have Delaware Park picks and analysis for every day of live racing at the venerable track. Today’s card features 10 races, and first post is 12:30 EDT.

Race #1 Picks: 1-5-6-4

In this $6250 maiden claiming race at six furlongs, #1 Stellwagen Banker (9-5) is taking a class drop after flashing some early speed at higher claiming levels. He is coming back six days after his last race. If he gets the lead today, he should be able to hold it against this group. #5 Catchhimandfreehim (8-1) will return to Delaware Park after racing against better at Gulfstream. He’s back to being trained by John  Rigattieri and won’t be facing the tough competition he faced last time he ran here. #6 Commission Always (6-1) is a first-time starter that was purchased for $20,000 and has a good string of workouts. Anthony Pecoraro has three wins in fifteen starts with maiden claimer first-time starters.

Race #2 Picks: 6-1-4-2

In this starter allowance race for fillies and mares at 7 ½ furlongs on the turf, #6 Now Yus Cant Leave (9-5) has been shipping to tracks all over the East Coast and will be making her first start at Delaware. She is winless in three starts this year, but this looks like a good spot. There is not much early speed in this race so if she can stay close to the front, she has an excellent chance to win. #1 Compass Fire (7-2) was sprinting and then won in most recent in a route taken off the turf. She should get the lead, and Mena will probably try to lead from the gate to the finish line. #4 Maria’s Honor (5-2) is a deep closer that will be passing tired horses late. However, she may need more than 7 ½ furlongs and this turn-back may not be good for her.

Race #3 Picks: 3-4-5-2

In this $38,000 maiden race for two-year-old fillies at five furlongs, #3 Beads (9-5) was purchased at the Ocala Breeder’s sale for $180,000. In her debut at Belmont, she chased the speed but faded. She is facing a weaker field today and we have her on top.  #4 Rapid Ruby (5-2) got clear but was caught in a $50,000 Maiden claiming race. She should have learned from the experience and improve today. #5 Joyful Kitten (7-2) is a first-time starter that has a couple of five-furlong workouts under her belt. Her consistent workout pattern makes us optimistic about her debut.

Race #4 Picks: 5-2-6-4

In this $5000 claiming race for fillies and mares at six furlongs, #5 Liking it Twisted (5-2) set the pace and tired in her first race back after a 15-month break. We are looking for improvement in her second-race back and on the drop to $5000.  #2 Soupster (8-5) took a bad fall in last and has been away for eight months. If she runs back to her prior form, she should beat this field, but we want to see one race before we have the confidence to put her on top. #6 Daily Briefing (7-2) has gotten the place position in three straight. He should be able to stay in the top three with this group.

Race #5 Picks: 6-1-7-12

In this $16,000 N2L race at one mile and 70 yards on the turf, #6 Lying Jeff (8-1) has some good turf races, including his last here at Delaware when he swung wide and closed on $28,0000 claimers.  If he can equal that race, he will be in contention with this group. After leaving the maiden ranks, #1 My Boy Colton (7-2) ran third in a race taken off the turf.  If he can match his turf effort today, he will be in the mix. #7 Tiz Tact Toe (5-1) will be closing late and could get up for a piece of the trifecta.

Joe’s Notes

  • On the Wednesday card, three jockeys split the seven races not ridden by amateurs, with Daniel Centeno winning three and Carol Cedeno and Jaime Rodriguez two each…
  • Trainers Jamie Ness and Andy Simoff won two races each…

Race #6 Picks: 1-4-7-8

In this $10,000 claiming race for fillies and mares at six furlongs, #1 Between Dreams (2-1) will be running her second race after almost two years away. She was running late in last to get by Let’s Be Honest while never a threat to the winner. We expect improvement off that race.  #4 Let’s Be Honest (3-1) will be making her first start for Chelsey Moysey, who wins at 24% in 17 tries on first after a claim. This mare is adding blinkers and is a pretty steady performer. We think she will be in the mix. #7 Blunt Force (4-1) was in good form at Parx before taking a 60-day break. She fits well here if she can repeat those races.

Race #7 Picks: 7-5-9-8

In this $50,000 allowance race for Delaware Certified three-year-olds and upward at 7 ½ furlongs on the turf, #7 Sue Loves Barbados (5-2) is one of two Phil Capuano trainees in this race. He won his last start here at Delaware at this distance, and a repeat of that race will put him in the driver’s seat today. Capuano has two wins in four starts this meet. #5 Berks (7-2) only has two turf starts with not much to show for it, but he is in such good form that if he runs on the grass he must be considered.  #9 Cannon’s Roar (4-1) is the other Capuano trainee in this race. He has been running fairly well but has not been able to win since 2020. He has enough talent to be in the mix with this field.

Race #8 Picks: 3-5-2-6

In this $25,000 maiden claiming race at one mile, #3 Rebel Joke (7-2) showed some speed on the grass and will now try the dirt. Most of her foes in this race have had many chances to win but have not succeeded. Trainer  Antonio Machado has four wins in twelve starts at Delaware, and we have this gelding on top. #5 Sustenance (9-5) is coming from Laurel and dropping from maiden special to maiden claiming. He had a good race here at Delaware last year and could be a factor. #2 Home School (5-2) has come close but has not been able to win in 18 tries. This will be his first race at Delaware and if he likes the track, he could leave the maiden ranks today.
