Delaware Park picks and analysis: July 7, 2023

Live racing at Delaware Park kicks off May 24 and runs through late October.

Once again this year, we will have Delaware Park picks and analysis for every day of live racing at the venerable track. Today’s card features eight races, and first post is 12:30 EDT.

Race #1 Picks: 2-4-6-3

In this $6250 maiden claiming race at one mile and 70 yards, most of the horses consistently lose by double digit lengths. #2 Dagda (5-2) Ran second last time out and beat a couple of other horses in this race by more than fifteen lengths after pressing the winner early. If he repats that race, he will likely win today.  #4 Twirling Charlie (7-2) has been running poorly at Parx but is getting Lasix for the first time, adding blinkers, and is taking a class drop. This is Trainer Daniel Valezquez’s first starter at Delaware this year. #6 El Patojo (9-5) is dropping down and had a few good efforts in maiden races last year. Both races this year have been discouraging but he should get into the trifecta with this group.

Race #2 Picks: 1-5-3-6

In this $6250 N2L claiming race at one mile, #1 Sheer Element (4-1) is moving down the claiming ladder. He has shown a little late speed in his dirt races this year and he’s found a weak field today. We have him on top. #5 Sidney’s Bid (5-2) has been competitive lately but can’t quite get over the top. He should be in the mix again today if he can repeat his last few races. #3 The Colora Kid (9-5) closed and just missed at this level in last. If he can stay close to the front early, he has a shot today.

Race #3 Picks: 2-7-3-8

Trainer Graham Motion wins with 11% of two-year-old firsters in special weight company, and #2 Yatta (9-2) has been working well enough towards her debut; she seems to have breezed a couple of times in company with Toupie, who was a sharp debut winner at Laurel last week… #7 Master of Malice (5-2) had a good runner-up effort on debut, and sire Palace Malice has had success getting turf sprinters…

Race #4 Picks: 1-5-9-7

In this $6250 N2L claiming Race at six furlongs, #1 Rascally Rebel (3-1) is coming in from Maryland and dropping to the lowest claiming level if his career. He was running well in $10,000 claimers with speed figures in the mid-50s and that should be good enough to beat this field. #5 Seeing Red (4-1) came close to winning in his last try and seems to be improving. If he can match that effort today against this group, he has a chance for the top spot. #9 Wootdareitis (12-1) had some decent races in Tampa. He will likely be sent to the front early and try hold off the others. One to consider.

Race #5 Picks: 2-1-4-9

Top choice #2 Mosalah (10-1) ran last time like a horse who needed the race, in contention much of the way with insufficient kick in the end. She’s mostly kept better company than these… #1 Shaolin (3-1) was willing in last and can move forward… #4 Glossamer (2-1) just missed versus similar two back before running a clunker on the dirt. With Mosalah, she gives trainer Lynn Ashby a shot at sweeping the exacta…

Joe’s Notes

  • Turf is soft today
  • Three Thursday wins for jockey Daniel Centeno have him atop the jockey standings with 17, one more than Jaime Rodriguez…

Race #6 Picks: 1-6-4-2

In this optional claiming race at five and a half furlongs, #1 St Andrews (3-2) looked very strong in last effort. In that race he dueled with Cloud Music who went on to win his next race. If he can repat the 86 speed figure he had in that race he will be tough to beat today. #6 Touchdown Montage (4-1) has been working well since his maiden victory at Charles Town. This three-year-old should improve and trainer Brittany Russell has won at 34% in 71 tries when brining horses back from a 61–180-day layoff.  #4 Liberty Star (3-1) won a race after getting claimed and will make his debut today for Jamie Ness who wins at 30% in 125 tries on first off a claim.

Race #7 Picks: 5-8-6-9

#5 Michele M. (3-1) was willing last out in her first turf try. That Belmont allowance has produced two next-out winners, and this half-million dollar purchase still has upside… Trainer Michael Stidham is having a productive meet, and though her last couple on dirt are poor, we’ll give #8 All About Me (10-1) another crack at what should be an enticing price. She broke her maiden locally last season, and her follow-up try, in a $100,000 Keeneland allowance, wasn’t bad at all… #6 Inanna’s Quest (10-1) was a good third two back versus similar, and we won’t hold the follow-up, washed onto the main track, against her…

Race #8 Picks: 3-2-5-6

In this $25,000 maiden claiming race for filles and mares at six furlong,s we don’t see any horse that is overly impressive, so we are going to take a flyer with first time starter #3 Dancinonthebeach (8-1). This filly has been working long and slow in the morning which should help her endurance. Hugh McMahon has won two-of-eight debut maiden claiming races this year. She should go off at generous odds and we have her on top. #2 Best Worst Idea (3-1) got off to a slow start and then was in some traffic in last. With a better trip she could take the top spot. #5 Shemademeblush (2-1) ran a closing third at this level in last. This will be this filly’s second start under Anthony Pecorino and there will be a jockey change to Kevin Gomez. She should show improvement.
