Delaware Park picks and analysis: June 30, 2023

Live racing at Delaware Park kicks off May 24 and runs through late October.

Once again this year, we will have Delaware Park picks and analysis for every day of live racing at the venerable track. Today’s card features eight races, and first post is 12:30 EDT.

Race #1 Picks: 1-2-3-4

In this $10,000 claiming race for fillies and mares at six furlongs, #1 Aferdita (2-1) has already beaten a couple of her other foes today. She has a sharp four-furlong work this week, which indicates she is still feeling good. We have her on top today. #2 Prospera (8-5) has been dull since coming from Parx, but she has a couple of solid efforts there at this claiming level earlier this year. She will probably inherit the lead today, which is always a big advantage on the Delaware main track. #3 Baci (8-1) is winless this year but did have three wins last year. If she runs back to those, she could be in the mix.

Race #2 Picks: 6-5-3-4

In this $25,000 maiden claiming race at one mile, #6 Define (5-2) did show some late speed in his debut in a $30,000 maiden race at Evangeline after starting slowly.  He’s the only horse in this race who has shown he can run a mile with any speed, and we are putting him on top. #5 Stonecoldwarrior (8-1) showed some speed when he was hustled out of the gate in last, but after the jockey lost his crop, it was hard to judge his ability. He can make an impact today if he races trouble-free.  #3 Martini Martin (9-5) is taking a class drop but has not done much running in his first two starts. We need to see one good race before we have any confidence in his ability.

Race #3 Picks: 9-5-3-6  (Dirt picks: 4-2-7-3)

In this $16,000 N3L claiming race at one mile and 70 yards on the turf, #9 Grecian Pharoah (6-1) ran evenly at this level but has lots of back class and needed his last race. We are expecting a big improvement and consider him a contender. #5 Shootin the Breeze (7-2) is making his second start since running in three-mile marathon steeplechase races. He ran well in a first-level allowance mile-and-a-half turf race at Laurel in last and looks very dangerous today if he can stay near the front early. #3 Ready Reward (5-2) faded late in his last try and was nipped at the wire two back. He looks like he has found a level where he is comfortable and should be in the mix.

Race #4 Picks: 5-4-2-3

In this $28,000 claiming race at one mile and 70 yards, #5 Grand Pick (3-1) has shown he can handle this distance and was facing tougher at Tampa. This is one of two Victor Barboza-trained horses in this race, and will be the one with longer odds, but we have him on top. #4 Hexagon (8-5) is the other Victor Barboza and is stretching out after trying sprints. He showed some speed in his last two races. Mychel Sanchez, Barboza’s regular rider, is on top. #2 Husband Material (2-1) seems to like the Delaware surface where he had a big maiden win and a fourth-place finish in the Rocky Run Stakes last year. Moving back to the dirt after some mediocre turf performances and should be considered.

Race #5 Picks: 11-8-6-9  (Dirt Picks: 8-2-7-10)

In this $16,000 maiden claiming race at one mile and 70 yards on the turf, #11 Stellar Lute (5-1) had lots of trouble last time. He had trouble cornering the first turn and then had to check later. He did show some running ability, and with a little racing luck he will be able to compete for the win. #8 Ghost of Khozan (6-1) was on the lead for much of his last race against better but faded in the lane. If he has the lead at the half pole against this group, he may not get caught. #6 Bushwick Bruiser (9-2) needed last after a long break, and if he can return to last year’s form he will be in the mix.

Joe’s Notes

  • Racing was canceled because of air quality Thursday…
  • Jockey John Hiraldo won a pair Wedensday and now has seven wins at the meet. Kevin Gomez won once and is alone in third in the standings with 10 wins…

Race #6 Picks: 1-7-5-6

In this $12,500 claiming race for fillies and mares at one mile, #1 Expect to be Ready (7-2) was racing well in Tampa. She likes to go to the front early and tries to make others catch her. That is a good strategy on the Delaware dirt, and she will be the one they are trying to catch today. She was two-for-two at Delaware last year. #7 Suiko (5-2) won after a six-month break and has three wins and two second-place finishes in seven dirt starts at Delaware Park. This looks like a good spot for this seven-year-old mare. #5 Elegant Taste (4-1) was running well at Penn before winning on the Presque Isle synthetic. This will be trainer Erin McClellan’s first starter at Delaware this year, and she has another horse going in Race #7. She only had one starter at Delaware Park last year and that horse finished third.

Race #7 Picks: 10-12-9-5 (Dirt Picks 1-6-3-13)

In this allowance/optional claiming race at 7 1/2 furlongs on the turf, #10 Scanno (3-1) only ran four races last year, but they were all strong efforts. Trainer Michael Stidham wins at 25% in 36 attempts when bringing back horses who have been away more than 180 days. This gelding has been working well and we have him on top. #12 Wow Whata Summer (5-1) won the Penn Mile last year but was in over his head in a series of stakes races the rest of the year. He won’t be facing that type of competition today. His race coming back this year was taken off the turf which was not to his liking. If this race stays on the turf, he must be considered. #9 It Can Be Done (4-1) was running in graded stakes races in California last year before moving to Monmouth and New York where he was not able to win. His back class and speed figures indicate he has a good shot today.

Race #8 Picks: 5-7-8-1

In this $16,000 claiming race for fillies and mares at six furlongs, #5 Unbridled Sass (7-2) is taking a class drop after facing tougher in her first race back this year.  If she can repeat her last several races from last year, she will be very competitive with his group of horses #7 Alice Harper (5-2) was claimed on her first outing at Delaware this year. She has no speed demons to fear in this contest, and if she can repeat her recent Gulfstream efforts, she should be in the thick of things. #8 My True Passion (5-1) is also dropping and had some good races last year. Se will try to go to the front and let the others chase.
