Delaware Park picks and analysis: June 22, 2023

Live racing at Delaware Park kicks off May 24 and runs through late October.

Once again this year, we will have Delaware Park picks and analysis for every day of live racing at the venerable track.

Today’s card features eight races, and first post is 12:30 EDT.

Race #1 Picks: 1-7-4-2

In this $25,000 maiden claiming race for two-year-old fillies at five furlongs, we don’t have much to go on other than workouts. Nothing stands out in pedigree analysis, and none of these horses has run an impressive race. #1 Articuno (6-1) has flashed some speed in her workouts and trainer Anthony Pecoraro does well with two-year-olds with a 29% winning percentage in 52 tries. We have this filly on top.  Likewise, #7 Made Birdie (4-1) has a consistent workout line at Monmouth, and trainer Claudio Gonzalez  has a 19% winning percentage with two-year-olds in 83 attempts. #4 Ritz on Broadway (3-1) did show some late kick in a maiden race in her debut and is a possibility.

Race #2 Picks: 3-2-5-1

In this $6250 claiming race at six furlongs, #3 Great Gogo (3-1) has had a few good races in Maryland this year with two wins. If he can get an early lead and control the pace, he will be hard to catch. #2 Overbearing (9-5) also has some early foot and will compete for the lead. He was in a little over his head against $12,500 claimers, but this looks like a good spot, and he doesn’t have stiff competition today, #5 Apache (2-1) also found $12,500 claimer too tough and is now back to a level where he could be a factor.

Race #3 Picks: 8-3-2-10

All races are off the turf. Picks are for anticipated entrants.

Race #4 Picks: 1-4-2-3

In this $38,000 maiden race for two-year-olds at five furlongs, we have six first-time starters.  One of the things we look for in baby races with first time starters is horses who have worked five furlongs. #1 Surfboard (9-5) has a five-furlong workout and trainer Brittany Russell is winning at a 30% clip. We have this colt on top. # 4 Ruby’s Flash (8-1) is one of the other horses with a five-furlong workout and he is starting for the always-dangerous combination of Jaime Rodriguez and Jamie Ness. #2 Malinois (8-1) is the last horse with a five-furlong workout, and we will include him in the trifecta.

Race #5 Picks: 10-12-13-3

All races are off the turf. Picks are for anticipated entrants.

Joe’s Notes

  • Two of the three scheduled turf races were moved to the main track Wednesday… In recent weeks, Delaware lost two days to air quality and another to freakish rain, in a tough run…

Race #6 Picks: 7-3-5-2

In the $50,000 allowance race for Delaware certified three-year-olds at six furlongs, the filly #7 Bound by Destiny (2-1) has won all four of her Delaware starts, Including winning the Blue Hen and the Small Wonder last year, before struggling in Maryland. This will be her second start after a break and will be a big step down after trying graded stakes company in last, though she is taking on boys. This filly looks to be the best if she is on her game. #3 Tappin Josie (4-1), another filly tackling the boys, is very consistent no matter which track she is running at. She has run first or second in ten of thirteen races. She has the talent to be a top contender here. #5 Picture This (3-1) has won two of three at Delaware and just missed in the Danzig Stakes at Penn National. Will look to take the lead early and go wire to wire.

Race #7 Picks: 3-5-13-6

All races are off the turf. Picks are for anticipated entrants.

Race #8 Picks: 5-7-3-2

In this $7500 maiden claiming race at one mile, #5 First to Last (6-5) has a history of fading late but is getting class relief and should be able to hold on today with this bunch. He has lost at low odds in last three, but we think he will get over the hump today. #7 Seax (10-1) showed some speed at Tampa earlier this year. Was running in dirt sprints and is stretching out. Could be a factor if he likes the extra ground. #3 Dagda (5-2) is getting a lot of class relief and has shown early speed in sprints.
