Delaware Park picks and analysis: June 10, 2023

Live racing at Delaware Park kicks off May 24 and runs through late October.

Once again this year, we will have Delaware Park picks and analysis for every day of live racing at the venerable track.

Today’s card features eight races, and first post is 12:30 EDT.

Race #1 Picks: 1-5-6-2

Nothing but first-timers in this maiden event for 2yo, which makes it a bit of a crap shoot… Trainer Brittany Russell has a 25% strike rate with 2yo firsters, thus giving #1 Prince Fred (9-5) the nod… Trainer Gary Capuano doesn’t have a great record with first-timers — but has a killer record second time out — but his trainee #5 Copper Tax (6-1) is a half to a winner and has a couple of good works… Jerry Robb has a pair in here; go-to rider Xavier Perez lands on #6 Dublshotofcourage (5-2)

Race #2 Picks: 4-1-5-2

Pretty useful return to action for top choice #4 Underdog (3-1), who in his first start in three months was part of a three-way scramble for the lead and stayed on willingly for third, just behind one of his speed rivals. Improvement expected… Recent efforts aren’t promising, but #1 Midnightcharly (12-1) is a veteran with plenty of good efforts to run back to, and he might get the setup today…#5 Classy Solution (4-1) bested Underdog last out…

Race #3 Picks: 2-6-5-7

Useful try in allowance company for #2 Asters d’Oro (3-1) at Tampa last out, and he lands in what should be a winning spot today. The horse he finished just behind two back returned to win an open $32k claimer in his follow-up… The return to the turf should be a huge plus for #6 Princess Pinky (2-1)#5 Romantic Comedy (4-1) fits with these…

Race #4 Picks: 5-6-4-7

Trainer Anthony Pecoraro, who has a solid record with two-year-old debut runners, sends out a pair here, and we’re inclined towards #5 Catalina Cruzin (6-1), who is the first foal out of an unraced mare… #6 Just the Thing (5-2) is the only horse here to have made a start, and he’s made two; both were respectable, and top local rider Carol Cedeno gets the call… #4 Rapid Ruby (7-2) is a daughter of onetime Preakness Stakes winner Cloud Computing…

Race #5 Picks: 7-1-2-5

#7 Ifihadachance (3-1) gets the nod here and has been running ultra-competitively against similar. She’s run good races sprinting but seems more a two-turn, middle-distance type of horse. That gives her the edge over #2 R Averie Lynn (2-1), a Delaware lover who’s done a lot of good recent work sprinting… #1 Sneaky Cheeky (6-1) has run well versus similar and makes her first start in the Carrasco barn…

Joe’s Notes

  • Racing returns after missing two days because of air quality issues…
  • Jaime Rodriguez and Jeremy Rose are tied atop the jockey standings with six wins apiece thus far, while Brittany Russell’s five wins lead all trainers…

Race #6 Picks: 3-1-2-6

An upset in the offing? This low-level maiden event has more question marks than answers, so we’ll aim for a surprise with #6 Little Henry (8-1), who drops a couple levels in his first off the bench… #1 Citi Creek (2-1) ran second versus similar in last… #2 Dondada (3-1) has run a couple of ok races since dropping into maiden claiming company…

Race #7 Picks:  7-6-2-3

Trainer Jonathan Thomas is an intriguing runner. It’ll be her first try on turf in this two-other-than allowance, though she did win at first asking on synthetic. Dam Truly Together was Grade 3-placed on the green stuff… Added ground shouldn’t be an issue for #6 Still My Babe (5-1), whose turf sprint efforts are pretty ok. If she does stretch out, she’ll contend here… Five-year-old #2 Jubilee Bridge (2-1) hasn’t done a thing wrong in her eight-race career…

Race #8 Picks: 1-3-2-7

Top choice #1 Honeycamp (3-1) scratched out of a similar spot yesterday to land in this maiden event, so clearly this looks like a winning spot to trainer Greg Compton… #3 Lady Lancer (2-1) takes a couple-level drop off a credible effort… #2 Best Worst Idea (8-1) ran pretty well two back and three back in maiden claiming ranks before finding herself in too-deep waters against special weight company. The drop back to the claiming ranks is a plus…
