A talented group of 3-year-old West Virginia-bred fillies will line up for Saturday night’s $75,000 Sylvia Bishop Memorial Stakes, the seventh race on the Charles Town card. Run at seven furlongs, the race honors the late trailblazing trainer Sylvia Bishop, and this year’s edition features a strong favorite facing five rivals.

Trainer Jeff Runco sends out three contenders, including the 7-5 morning line choice Zip Start, who boasts the highest earnings in the field and superior speed figures. The Upstart filly has been worse than third only once in six career starts and enters off a solid runner-up finish against older rivals in an allowance/optional claimer on June 20. A stakes winner last fall in the James and Eleanor Casey, Zip Start reunites with top local rider Arnaldo Bocachica and drew post 6.

Runco also saddles Our Miss Crossbow and Italian Song, though leading jockey Bocachica opts for Zip Start over the other two. Our Miss Crossbow (3-1) comes in off a sharp win in allowance company on July 10 and has finished in the money in four of five starts. Italian Song broke her maiden impressively on July 5 but will need to take a step forward against tougher company.

Another major player is Summon the Glam (9-2), trained by Kristy Petty. The consistent daughter of Juba has hit the board in eight of 10 starts and was runner-up in last fall’s West Virginia Breeders’ Classics Triple Crown Nutrition. She exits a second behind Over the Bull last out when defeated at 3-5.

Over the Bull (5-1) scored a 7-1 upset in that June 21 allowance win, kicking clear late for her third career score. A stakes-placed filly trained and owned by Michael Sterling, she’ll break from the rail under Denis Araujo.

Rounding out the field is Our Street Angel (12-1), a two-time winner for trainer Tim Grams who was named through a West Virginia Breeders Classics fan contest. She took a N2L allowance last out in a race that’s produced two next-out winners and will look to build on that momentum in deeper waters.
