Laurel Park jockeys and trainers to watch
Since Maryland racing shifted from Pimlico to Laurel Park in late September, no jockey has outrun his horses’ odds more than Jean Briceno, who is winning at a clip that provides 5.83 wins per 100 starts more than his runners’ odds suggest. Briceno is one of eight jockeys adding at least one victory per 100 starts.
Among trainers, Jose Corrales is winning at a rate that’s 9.08 wins per 100 starts above expectations.
The top 22 jockeys by starts – those who have made at least 35 starts – account for about 87 percent of victories recorded at Laurel this meet. Meanwhile, the top 36 trainers (with at least 20 starts) account for 66% of wins.
The Racing Biz analyzed the performance of each rider and trainer versus the takeout-adjusted odds on their runners. Each jockey’s and trainer’s wins were compared to their expected wins; for comparison purposes, they were then translated into a final “Added wins per 100 starts” metric.
