Laurel Park jockeys to watch

Of the 21 “regular” Maryland jockeys  – those that have ridden in at least 45 races contested in Maryland since the beginning of the Timonium meet – seven have won more races than expected, according to an analysis by The Racing Biz.

The Racing Biz analyzed each rider’s performance versus the takeout-adjusted odds on their mounts. Each jockey’s wins were compared to their expected wins; for comparison purposes, they were then translated into a final “Added wins per 100 starts” metric.

Having earlier enjoyed a 9-for-20 streak, veteran rider Forest Boyce is atop “Added wins per 100 starts” leaderboard. She has gone 12-for-52 over the last couple of months, her dozen wins nearly five higher than the 7.12 wins her odds would have projected. That translates to a colony-leading 9.38 added wins per 100 starts.

Timonium meet leader Xavier Perez, the go-to rider for the high-percentage John and Gina Robb operations, is next. Perez has won with 17 of his 76 mounts during the period, easily better than his expected-win total of 12.82. That nets out to 5.50 added wins per 100 starts.

During that period, Jeiron Barbosa has been the leading rider, registering 34 wins, 13 more than any other rider, from 156 mounts, the second-highest total. And your eyes haven’t been fooling you; he’s riding really well, his 34 wins easily topping expectations of 25.48. That means he’s added 5.46 wins per 100 starts versus expectations.

Others in positive figures over the last two months include apprentice Martina Rojas (15 total wins, 4.46 added wins per 100 starts), Jean Briceno (8, 4.12), Jean Alvelo (7, 2.24), and Will Humphrey (8, 1.25).
