Delaware Park picks and analysis: August 10, 2023

Live racing at Delaware Park kicks off May 24 and runs through late October.

Once again this year, we will have Delaware Park picks and analysis for every day of live racing at the venerable track. Today’s card features eight races, and first post is 12:30 EDT.

Today’s carryovers: None

Race #1 Picks: 1-2-3-4

In this $25,000 maiden claiming race for two-year-olds at 5 ½ furlongs, #1 Yahoo Omar (10-1) will be making his debut. He has a series of five-furlong workouts and trainer Andy Simoff has 3 wins in 12 starts when he debuts maiden claimers. #2 Play Hard (7-2) ran evenly in a $50,000 claimer and is dropping down in class. #3 Kick Startness (5-2) was in the same $50,000 claiming race as Play Hard and now these two foes will meet again.

Race #2 Picks: 9-7-5-1

In this $6250 claiming race at one mile, #9 Kidyounot (3-1) has lots of early speed and will set the pace today. This gelding has some fight in him and can keep running when challenged. We think he will be able to repel the challengers today and hold on for a win.  #7 What’s to Blame (2-1) is a closer who’ll be running late. Parx shippers do well here and this one has the meet’s top trainer/jockey combination. #5 Curlin’s Thrill (8-1) got a bad start last out, but we’ll toss that, and if he can repeat earlier races, he will be in the mix.

Race #3 Picks: 6-8-2-9 (Dirt Picks 1-3-6-8)

In this optional claiming/starter allowance race at about one mile and 70 yards on the turf, #6 Una Luna (6-1) was claimed in June and is now in the hands of a high percentage trainer. He has a string of consistent workouts since that time. If ha can approach the speed he had when he was running at Gulfstream earlier this year, he could take the top spot today. #8 Complete (3-1) finished close to the front in last two and the winners of those races went on to win again in their next outing. This closer will be charging late and will be passing tired horses. #2 Bramble Bush (4-1) is another closer. He has not won this year but had four wins last season and he is usually in the mix.

Race #4 Picks: 7-2-4-6

In this optional claiming/starter allowance race at 1 1/16 miles, #7 Mr. Thrifty (10-1) will be making his second start since being claimed. He ran evenly last time, and he should improve off that race. This horse is game and always puts in a good effort. We have him on top. #2 Flat Out Flying (2-1) has 7 wins in 11 tries at Delaware Park.  He fits well with this group and will be in the mix. #4 Clubman (4-1) was facing better horses in Maryland. This nine-year-old was a stakes horse earlier in his career, and he still has some gas left in the tank.

Race #5 Picks: 2-9-5-1 (Dirt Picks: 2-10-3-7)

In this $16,000 maiden claiming race at about one mile and 70 yards on the turf, #2 Double O Otto (8-1) ran well in two races taken off the turf and may get to stay on the grass today. If he runs on the grass, he may have an advantage over this field. #9 Run for Karl (5-1) had two solid efforts on the turf in June. Then he ran well in a race taken off the turf here at Delaware. He looks well spotted today. #5 Mintenon (4-1) is taking a large class drop and had some good turf races earlier in the year.

Joe’s Notes

  • Wednesday’s races were won by eight different jockeys and eight different trainers…
  • There were a bunch of short-priced winners, but with two carryovers and a 16-1 horse in the middle, the two Pick 5s both returned over $1200…

Race #6 Picks: 7-4-3-1

In this first-level allowance/optional claiming race for fillies at one mile, #7 Beautiful and Bold (2-1) has been away since April but has been working consistently. Was running well here last year before moving to Oaklawn. She’s in an excellent spot here and we have her on top. After winning a maiden race, #4 Bella Paloma (5-2) ran evenly in a first-level allowance race. She should improve off that race, and she should be in the mix. #3 Grace and Charm (8-1) ran well but could not hold the lead in her first race at Delaware. However, that was a good effort, and we are looking for improvement today.

Race #7 Picks: 8-11-10-1 (Dirt Picks: 1-10-9-4)

In this optional claiming/starter allowance race at about one mile and 70 yards on the turf, #8 Petit Fils (Fr) (5-1) will be making his fourth start of the year. He has three lifetime races at Delaware with one win. This turf specialist has some good races on the turf, and we have him on top today, #11 The Skipster (10-1) had a number of solid turf races at Tampa earlier this year. He likes to go to the front and let the others chase. There is not a lot of other speed in this race and that may be a good strategy today. #10 Offshore Affair (3-1) has been in good form at Parx and should be considered.

Race #8 Picks: 6-4-2-1

In this $12,500 claiming race at one mile, #6 Alvy (2-1) has been running well here at Delaware against better horses. Now this horse is dropping to a level where he should be able to win. He looks to be the best of this group. #4 Krug (3-1) has been struggling since coming back from a long break but is now dropping to a level where he should make an impact. #2 Just Plain Ordinary (6-1) has early speed and will go out fast and will try to hold off the late chargers in the stretch.
