Delaware Park picks and analysis: July 14, 2023

Live racing at Delaware Park kicks off May 24 and runs through late October.

Once again this year, we will have Delaware Park picks and analysis for every day of live racing at the venerable track. Today’s card features eight races, and first post is 12:30 EDT.

Race #1 Picks: 6-8-3-2

In this $5000 claiming race at six furlongs, #6 He’s a Shooter (8-1) will be making his second start of the season. He showed some speed and faded in his season debut. He should improve in his second race back, and the class drop will help. #8 Backatya (5-2) ran a 68-speed figure in last and is facing a very weak field here. He is a top competitor. #3 First Rule (4-1) was running against much tougher competition in Florida last year.  He should be competitive against bottom level claimers.

Race #2 Picks: 3-4-1-2

In this $16,000 N2L claiming race at 5 ½ furlongs, #3 Child Proof (9-5) vied for the lead but could not match the winner in her last. In that race she easily defeated a couple of others entered in this race. We think she will win today.  #4 For Cryin Out Loud (6-1) left the maiden ranks in Maryland and then came to Delaware and tried tougher than she will face today. Now dropping to a level where she can be a top contender. #1 Alice Harper (5-2) finished behind Child Proof in last but looks good enough to be in the trifecta again.

Race #3 Picks: 6-4-1-5

In this $38,000 maiden race at 7 ½ furlongs on the turf, #6 Donegal Danny (6-1) will be making his turf debut. He showed speed on the dirt two back. This turf race may be an experiment to see if he likes the grass, but we think he is a good spot today. #4 Blind Eye (3-1) came back after a four-month break and ran a 70 speed figure in a race similar to today’s. He should improve that figure today and is a top contender. #1 Sports Editor (2-1) won his turf debut but was disqualified when he drifted. If he repeats that race without drifting, he will be in the mix.

Race #4 Picks: 6-3-1-5

In this $5000 claiming race for fillies and mares at six furlongs, #5 Liking it Twisted (5-2) set the pace and tired in her first race back after a 15-month break. We are looking for improvement in her second-race back and on the drop to $5000.  #2 Soupster (8-5) took a bad fall in last and has been away for eight months. If she runs back to her prior form, she should beat this field, but we want to see one race before we have the confidence to put her on top. #6 Daily Briefing (7-2) has gotten the place position in three straight. He should be able to stay in the top three with this group.

Race #5 Picks: 6-3-8-1

In this optional claiming/starter allowance race for filles and mares at 7 ½ furlongs on the turf, #6 Raise Your Game (3-1) was doing well at this level in Maryland. She will be stretching out to 7 ½ furlongs today, which could be a good thing since she might like extra distance to work with. #3 Klayton’s Kandy (2-1) has been running well this year with solid speed figures on the grass. This will be the first Mark Salvaggio-trained horse to race at Delaware this year. #8 Thunder Buggy (10-1) had some solid turf races in Florida before coming to Delaware.  Lots of early speed and the horse the others will be chasing.

Joe’s Notes

  • Jaime Rodriguez won three Thursday to pull within one of meet leader Daniel Centeno…
  • Two of the wins came for trainer Jamie Ness, who is beginning to widen his meet lead…
  • The Thursday nightcap has no official third quarter time listed, but on the screen it was shown as 1:13.55…

Race #6 Picks: 1-5-4-7

In this optional claiming/starter allowance at six furlongs, #1 Cloud Music (3-2) defeated Paradise Valley in his last race with a front-running victory. There is other early speed in this race, so he will not get an easy lead today, but we think he will have enough to get it done. #5 Take a Hint (4-1) keeps improving with every race. This will be his second race as a three-year-old, and he could surprise with a big effort. #4 Paradise Valley (3-1) ran second to Cloud Music in last and fits well with this group. He will be in the mix.

Race #7 Picks: 6-9-7-5

In this $50,000 starter allowance race at 7 ½ furlongs on the turf, #6 Cosmic Speculation (7-2) has shown speed and faded in stakes competition but had several very good turf races at Gulfstream. He should be able to take control of the pace and carry it to the finish line. #9 Highestdistinction (5-2) is coming off a solid race at Monmouth where he posted an 88 speed figure. That was a game effort, and if he can repeat it, he has a good chance to win. #7 Sonic Speed (9-2) won a claiming race at Belmont and does have a race over the Delaware track when he ran second last year. He should be in the mix.

Race #8 Picks: 3-6-5-4

In this $6250 claiming race at one mile, #3 Apache (5-2) was claimed last time out and will be making his first start for Elliot Sullivan who wins at 21% in 56 attempts on first after a claim. This gelding has had some good races this year and we have him on top. #6 Cosmic Treasure (9-5) was also claimed last time out. He has the most early speed in this contest, and if Centeno can get clear, he may not get caught. #5 Camp Pendleton (4-1) had a couple decent races earlier this year and could find his way into the trifecta.
