Delaware Park picks and analysis: July 12, 2023

Live racing at Delaware Park kicks off May 24 and runs through late October.

Once again this year, we will have Delaware Park picks and analysis for every day of live racing at the venerable track. Today’s card features 10 races, and first post is 12:30 EDT.

Race #1 Picks: 4-1-6-5

In this $20,000 maiden claiming race for two-year-olds at five furlongs, #4 Joey Tickles (3-1) surged late in his debut race to miss by a head. The other horses in this race are either first-time-starters or are dropping in class after poor performances. We are going to go with the horse with the best current form. #1 Wesley Thomas (6-1) showed early speed in his debut and is now at a claiming level where his speed might hold. #6 Wild Alex (2-1) is a first-time starter for Anthony Pecoraro, who has won at a 28% clip with two-year-olds in 53 attempts. He has a nice workout line and is a possible contender.

Race #2 Picks: 7-3-6-1

In this $6,250 N2L claiming race for fillies and mares at six furlongs, #7 Beargrease (2-1) came back after an eight-month break and faded after pressing the pace. She should be better this time and, in a race lacking any early speed, she should be able to control the pace. We have her on top. #3 Lizzies Red Velvet (12-1) is dropping down after flashing speed with better. Horses that flash speed at a higher class level and fade can be good bets when they drop. #6 Binoche (8-5) ran a good race at Monmouth in May posting a 47 speed figure. Trainer Jorge Delgado has two wins in three tries at Delaware this year. One to consider.

Race #3 Picks: 4-5-2-3

In this $16,000 maiden claiming race at one mile and 70 yards on the turf, #4 Practicallymine (3-1) ran well at this level on the turf at Parx with a 53 speed rating. If he can match that race, he should take the top spot today. #5 Mulsanne (4-1) is making his return after nine months away.He has shown some closing ability on the turf and could be in the mix. #2 Maybe It’s time (10-1) had a couple of good turf races here at Delaware last year and may enjoy a return to the grass.

Race #4 Picks: 3-5-6-7

In this $8,000 starter allowance race at one mile, #3 Flat Out Flying (3-2) has consistently run strong races at this level with speed figures in the 80s. He struggled in last against better but is now moving back down to a level where his has been very successful.  #5 Exit Right (4-1) has been facing tougher horses at Parx and Aqueduct and has been holding his own. He did face Flat Out Flying here at Delaware last year and did not fare well, but this looks like a great spot for him. #6 My Redemption (7-2) was claimed at Churchill Downs in last and has a couple good races this year.

Race #5 Picks: 2-10-11-6

In this $16,000 N2L claiming race for fillies and mares at one mile and 70 yards on the turf, #2 Seiver (5-1) is in good form and ran a decent race on the turf two back. He is not facing any monsters today, and we think he will get it done if he can get a good break. Jaime Rodriguez will be on top for the first time, and he can get the most out of a horse.  #10 Magnificent Pearl (8-1) has been facing better on the dirt and showed some late speed on the grass last year. We think this is a live longshot that will be in the mix today. #11 Filtered Light (4-1) did show some late speed in a recent turf race. Could be in the mix.

Joe’s Late Pick 5

  • Race #4: 3
  • Race #5: 2, 6, 10, 11
  • Race #6: 1, 4, 6, 7
  • Race #7: 3, 4, 10, 11
  • Race #8: 6
  • Total: $32.00 (50-cent base)

Race #6 Picks: 1-6-7-4

In this $10,000 claiming race at one mile and 70 yards, #1 Doin’ittherightway (3-1) has been running well at Monmouth and jockey Jose Batista is making the trip with him and will get his first ride at Delaware this year. This looks like a good spot, and we have this gelding on top. #6 Tiny Tin (6-1) will be making his second start of the year. He had two wins here last year. This closer will be passing tired horses late and may get up for a piece of the pie.  #7 Paradise Pride (2-1) has run very against bottom-level claimers since he was claimed. He will try to make it two straight today.

Race #7 Picks: 11-3-4-10

In this $50,000 allowance race for Delaware Certified filles and mares at seven and a half furlongs on the turf, #11 Neecie Marie (7-2) looked sharp winning her first turf start at Parx. This improving three-year-old has won two straight. #3 Downtown Katie (5-2) is a deep closer who has been running against better in Maryland. She will be charging late and passing tiring horses. She should be considered.  #4 My Thoughts (10-1) has not been running well this year but has two wins in seven tries on the turf and will be a contender if she runs her best.

Race #8 Picks: 6-7-2-4

In this $6,250 maiden claiming race for filles and mares at six furlongs, #6 Honeycamp (3-2) is dropping to the lowest level of her career and her speed figures look superior to her foes in this race. She should be able to get an early lead and carry it to the finish line. #7 Dats a Superstar (5-2) just missed at this level two back when she edged out Lemonsanddiamonds for the place position. She fits well here. #2 Job’s Not Finished (5-1) is dropping back down to $6250, where she had a good race two back.
