Delaware Park picks and analysis: July 8, 2023

Live racing at Delaware Park kicks off May 24 and runs through late October.

Once again this year, we will have Delaware Park picks and analysis for every day of live racing at the venerable track. Today’s card features 10 races, and first post is 12:30 EDT.

Race #1 Picks: 7-6-2-8

In this $25,000 maiden claiming race for two-year-olds at five furlongs, #7 Amorica (3-1) raced greenly in his debut and went wide in the far turn, but still managed to close some ground late. Now dropping to $25,000 and that experience should help him improve. We don’t usually like first time starters in maiden claiming races; if they had talent, they would be in a maiden special weight race. However, #6 Insouciant (5-2) was purchased at the Ocala Breeders Sale for $65,000 and has been working well. We think this colt could make an impact today. #2 Princess Peanut (4-1) found maiden company too tough and is now dropping to maiden claiming. That drop could put him in the mix.

Race #2 Picks: 7-6-1-2

In this $16,000 maiden claiming race for fillies and mares at one mile and 70 yards on the turf, #7 Rebel Consort (9-2) tried the grass for the first time in last and ran a closing third in Tampa. Angel Arroyo will be on board again and this looks like a great spot for this filly to get her first win. #6 My Jo Jo (7-2) will be making her second start for Chelsey Moysey. She ran well in a race taken off the turf in last and has had one good turf race. We think she will improve today. #1 Satisfied (3-1) has some good races but has not been able to win in twelve tries. She does have competitive speed figures and could be in the mix.

Race #3 Picks: 4-5-2-1

In this $16,000 claiming race at one mile and 70 yards, #4 Thtwasthenthisisnw (7-2) just missed in a race taken off the turf in his first try at Delaware. He has often run second at higher class levels and may have found a level where he can win. #5 Brooklyn Guy (3-2) has been running on the grass but is dropping in class and has some very fast workouts on the Delaware dirt track. If those workouts translate to today’s race, he will be very dangerous. #2 Orocovix (5-2) has won his only start at Delaware and may like running here.

Race #4 Picks: 5-2-12-3

In this $16,000 maiden claiming race for fillies and mares at one mile and 70 yards on the turf, #5 Bring the Magic (9-2) did show some running ability on the turf in her most recent races. Two back she got crowded and lost some ground in a maiden event before gaining mildly in the stretch. If she can get a trouble-free trip, she has a chance to win today. #2 Jaylee (12-1) showed some early speed at a turf route at Penn. Has been working at Fair Grounds and is and getting Lasix. This longshot could surprise today. #12 Peace Fire (3-1) was in tight quarters but got up for third in recent turf route at Laurel.

Race #5 Picks: 7-8-9-10

In the $100,000 Dashing Beauty Stakes for fillies and mares at six furlongs, #7 I’m the Boss of Me (6-1) ran third to Cheetara in the Skipat Stakes when Cheetara get a perfect outside trip. She was the beaten favorite in a Delaware allowance next out behind next-out stakes winner My Beautiful Belle. This mare has won on the Delaware main track before, and we have her on top. #8 Malibu Beauty (9-2) has five wins and three second-place finishes in nine tries at this distance. You can always count on a game performance from this mare and she will be in the thick of things. #9 Cheetara (3-1) won the Skipat Stakes with a perfect outside trip. She will be closing late again while picking off tiring horses. One to consider.

Joe’s Late Pick 5

  • Race #4: 5, 2, 12, 3
  • Race #5: 7, 8, 9
  • Race #6: 2, 3, 6, 9
  • Race #7: 1, 7
  • Race #8: 5
  • Total: $48.00 (50-cent base)

Race #6 Picks: 6-2-3-9

In this $38,000 maiden race for fillies and mares at 1 1/16 miles on the turf, #6 Heckled (5-1) drifted in the stretch in last and could not quite get to the winner but did show a burst of speed and looks like she is sitting on a big race. Florent Geroux is up, and we have this filly on top. #2 Sun Bee (3-1) just missed in last two tries and ran a 77 speed figure in last. This filly is improving and is one of the top contenders today.  #3 Anna Lucia (4-1) was closing on the Presque Isle synthetic in her debut race. Adding blinkers today. When Christophe Clement sends horses to Delaware they need to be considered.

Race #7 Picks: 1-7-3-8

In the $150,000 Battery Park Stakes at 1 1/16 miles #1 Fearless (3-1) was on a run last year, doing very well in graded stakes races until he was eased in the Greenwood Cup Stakes at Parx. He returned to racing last month in the Grade 2 True North when he ran evenly. This is his second race back and if he can regain anywhere near last year’s form, he should be able to win this race. This race will let us know if this seven-year-old still has gas in the tank #7 Ridin With Biden (6-1) has some nice stakes wins and ran second in The Battery Park Stakes last year. He has run well both times he has raced at Delaware and will be in the mix. #3 Doppelganger (4-1) won three straight including the Grade 1 Carter Handicap at 18-1 before struggling in the Metropolitan Handicap. Not facing any horses today as tough as Cody’s Wish like he did in that race and should be considered.

Race #8 Picks: 5-3-9-4

In this $38,5000 first-level allowance race at 1 1/16 miles on the turf, #5 Prowling Tiger (9-2) is an improving three-year-old. He had a lifetime best speed figure of 74 in last, and we look for him to take another step up the ladder today. He is our top pick. #3 Twist ‘n Twirl (5-2) has been fading late, but the turn back to 1 1/16 miles should help. #9 Wrecking Ball (10-1) was running well at this distance in Tampa last year and has been working well.

Race #9 Picks: 3-6-5-2

In the Grade 2 $500,000 Delaware Handicap for filles and mares at 1 3/16 miles, #3 Idiomatic (7-5) recently won the Grade 3 Shawnee Stakes with a 102 speed rating and ran second in the Grade 2 Ruffian. This filly won at 1 ¼ miles in January so this distance should not be a problem. It’s hard to find any negatives about this filly going into this race, and we have her on top today. #6 Morning Matcha (5-2) closed to just miss in the Obeah Stakes in last. She was competitive in graded stakes company last year, running second in the Grade 1 Cotillion stakes at 49-1 at Parx. She also ran third in last year’s Delaware Oaks. This filly is very consistent and will be in the mix. #5 Classy Edition (7-2) is another horse that has competed in graded stakes company, winning the Grade 2 Royal Delta Stakes in February. She has won three of her last four, with her only stumble being the Grade 1 La Troienne Stakes. She has proven she can compete at a high level and fits well here.

Race #10 Picks: 2-5-4

In this $38,000 maiden race for fillies and mares at 5 1/2 furlongs, #2 Wright Up Front (6-1) is a first-time starter whose work line includes a series of 5-furlong moves and a bullet half-mile. We think this filly will be ready to run in her debut, and we have her on top. #5 Dialherup (5-2) was claimed for $50,000 at Keeneland two back and then faded in a maiden race at Parx a couple weeks later. She should be better in her second try since the claim. #4 Mo Traffic (9-5) was claimed in her debut race and ran a game second. She has been working very well and should be on the board today.
