Delaware Park picks and analysis: July 5, 2023

Live racing at Delaware Park kicks off May 24 and runs through late October.

Once again this year, we will have Delaware Park picks and analysis for every day of live racing at the venerable track. Today’s card features eight races, and first post is 12:30 EDT.

Race #1 Picks: 1-2-3-4

In this $38,000 maiden race for fillies and mares at one mile, #1 Elke Lodge (7-5) closed very well in the stretch in her last after dropping back early. Jaime Rodriguez will probably try to keep her closer to the pace, and if she can show any of the late speed she demonstrated in her debut, she should win this race. #2 Appealingtothe Eye (9-5) Was very game in last but could not quite get up to win at Pimlico. We are still waiting for trainer Cathal Lynch to heat up in the 2023 Delaware meet, as he won at a 29% clip in 79 races in the 2022 meet. It could start today. #3 Gun Runnin’ Gal (12-1) will try a dirt route for the first time, and if she likes the distance she could find her way into the trifecta.

Race #2 Picks: 1-6-5-2

In this $5000 claiming race for fillies and mares at one mile, there aren’t any world beaters, so we are going to take a swing with a longshot. #1 Nurse Ratchett (8-1) came out of the gate very quickly in last and had the lead for the first half mile but went on to tire in the last quarter. That race helped her endurance, and we think she will be in contention today. #6 Heleonortiz (3-2) has been showing early speed and managed to win an $8000 claiming race two back. She has found a level where she can be consistently competitive. Trainer Antonio Machado has won three times in nine tries at Delaware this year. #5 Chica Rabiosa (3-1) has been running poorly and now has a new trainer.  She is coming from Laurel and taking a class drop, so possibly she will wake up.

Race #3 Picks: 4-1-7-3

All races are off the turf. Picks are for projected main-track starters.

Race #4 Picks: 1-7-6-5

In this $6250 N2L claiming race for fillies and mares at one mile, #1 Grass Cutter (5-1) is working her way down the claiming ladder. She has shown early speed and at this level she may be able to fend off her foes. We have her on top. #7 Fortibug (4-1) is an Arkansas-bred who was running against better stock at Oaklawn. She hasn’t shown much since her maiden win, but she isn’t facing any monsters today and should be in the mix. #6 Dorothy’s the Boss (5-2) broke her maiden at Delaware and could get in the trifecta.

Race #5 Picks: 9-3-2-7

All races are off the turf. Picks are for projected main-track starters.

Joe’s Notes

  • Jockey Paco Lopez won three of four in his Saturday visit to Delaware…
  • Trainer Brittany Russell maintains a narrow lead in the trainer standings with nine wins, one more than Jamie Ness…

Race #6 Picks: 4-5-7-2

In this $12,500 claiming race at six furlongs, #4 Shanghai Superfly (2-1) was running well at Parx. and Parx shippers usually do well here. This will be his first race on the Delaware main track and his speed figures look strong. We have him on top today. #5 The Sicarii (9-2) was claimed last time out and finished second as the favorite. He did have a win here at Delaware last year and has had good success here. He should compete for the top spot today. #7 Bazoo (3-1) has seven wins in thirty-one lifetime starts. He has been fading late recently, but he should be able to hold on against most of this group.

Race #7 Picks: 7-8-9-1

All races are off the turf. Picks are for projected main-track starters.

Race #8 Picks: 5-1-6-3

This $5000 claiming race for N3L at one mile and 70 yards is very competitive and might be a race to hit the “All” button for exotic bets.  #5 Kidyounot (6-1) has a lot of early speed but has not quite been able to hold on. Now down with the bottom level claimers and he might be able to hold on. If he can get a clear lead, he has a chance to win. Trainer Jamie Ness has apprentice Skylar Zaplitny aboard #1 Storied Fella (3-1). This gelding will go back to running a route after trying sprinting. The class drop puts him in a position to make an impact. #6 Icy Minister (4-1) is dropping to the lowest claiming level of his racing career, and if he can repeat some of his recent Laurel races, he will be right there at the finish line.
