Delaware Park picks and analysis: July 1, 2023

Live racing at Delaware Park kicks off May 24 and runs through late October.

Once again this year, we will have Delaware Park picks and analysis for every day of live racing at the venerable track. Today’s card features eight races, and first post is 12:30 EDT.

Race #1 Picks: 4-7-3-1

In this $10,000 claiming race for fillies and mares at six furlongs, #4 Need A Marker (9-2) is coming to Delaware from Maryland and taking a class drop. She has some early speed and looks to be in a good spot. We think she has a slight advantage over this field. #7 My Sister Clurrie (3-1) is a quick starter and is dropping to a level where that speed might hold. Ran well at Charles Town last year but still looking for success at Delaware. #3 Gleaming Brutality (8-5) has been running well in $8000 conditioned claimers at Tampa but will have to do a little better to win today.

Race #2 Picks: 3-6-2-1

In this allowance/optional claiming race at six furlongs, #3 Chicks Dig Scars (3-2) has been running against much better and been running very well with speed figures in the mid- to high- 80s.  This class drop makes him the one to beat.  #6 It’s Sizzling Time (3-1) was impressive at Delaware last year and has recently been in good form at Parx. It looks like he will be a contender today. #2 Golden Juan (6-1) was in the top three in all three of his races at Delaware last year. His early running style helped him then and will help him again today.

Race #3 Picks: 3-9-1-10   (Dirt Picks: 9-1-2-8)

In this $32,000 maiden claiming race for fillies and mares at 1 1/8 miles on the turf, #3 Bomberella (2-1) recently ran in maiden turf races at Monmouth where she ran evenly. It is quite a big class drop to this level, and she looks like a contender today. #9 Candy Coop (8-1) was entered for the turf last time, but the race was moved to the main track. The move from Oaklawn to a Delaware Park claiming turf race  could set her up for a good effort. #1 Chez Soleil (6-1) also ran in the race taken off the turf with Candy Coup in last and ran decently. If this stays on the turf, he should be considered.

Race #4 Picks: 6-7-3-1

In the $100,000 Alapocas Run Stakes at six furlongs, #6 Run Classic (2-1) held his own in a series of graded stakes races this year and came within a half length of winning the Mineshaft Stakes at the Fair Grounds. He has been running longer lately but has shown he can get out of the gate quickly and has won at this distance before. #7 Twisted Ride (5-1) won four straight before running second in the Grade 3 Runhappy Stakes at Belmont. He raced once here at Delaware, but that was a route race, which is not his preferred distance. His frontrunning style will help him today, when he is battling Lightning Larry for the lead. It won’t be easy to hold on because he has tough horses that will be trying to track him down. #3 Lightning Larry (7-2) is another frontrunner who has been doing well in a series of stakes races like today’s. He can run with the lead, or off the pace and we have him in our trifecta.

Race #5 Picks: 1-2-3-7   (Dirt Picks:  1-2-3-7)

In this $38,000 maiden race at 1 3/8 miles on the turf, #1 Asthros (5-2) started a little slow in his last race but changed lanes in the stretch and showed some running ability. That was an impressive race for his debut, and if he improves today. he has a good chance to win.  #2 Now and Later (9-5) is a Shug McGaughey-trained colt who has been running in turf routes. He is a deep closer who often  runs out of ground before he can pass the others. This 1 3/8 miles looks like it will suit him well, and he will be in the mix today. #3 Sleight of Hand (12-1) has not run in almost two years, but we see no horses we like other than our top two choices, and at one time he had some ability, so we are going to add him to our trifecta.

Joe’s Notes

  • As of Saturday morning, races are on the turf
  • Jockey Daniel Centeno won twice to move within two wins of meet leader Jaime Rodriguez…Joe had four top-choice winners (from eight races) on Friday…

Race #6 Picks: 4-6-5-7

In this N1K allowance/optional claiming race for fillies and mares at one mile, #4 Waterworks (4-1) was facing tougher at Oaklawn before moving to Delaware and racing in a first-level allowance race on the turf. Now moving back to dirt and his early speed should carry the day. #6 Awesome Pic (5-2)  was running well in Florida, but did not respond in his first race here. This filly is extremely consistent, so she may have been bothered by the travel. We are going to forgive that race and think she will be much better today. #5 She’sarollingstone (4-1) has only run twice this year and has been on the shelf since March. If she can regain the form she had at Laurel, she will be a contender.

Race #7 Picks: 3-8-9-7 (Dirt picks: 8-11-3-10)

The Grade 3, $250,000 Robert G. Dick Memorial Stakes for fillies and mares at 1 3/8 miles on the turf is full of talented horses and no clear favorite can be found. #3 Lovely Princess (6-1) has proven she can run long on the grass. In her most recent race she closed well in the Keertana Stakes at a mile and a half. She has also ran well in the Grade 2 Mrs. Revere Stakes last year. We feel like this filly still has not run her best race, and we have her on top today. #8 Miss Yearwood (4-1) found graded stakes races a little too tough but has been dominant in the two races since then in Kentucky. This deep closer will be making a late charge and if the frontrunners aren’t on their game, she will blow right by them. #9 Viareggio (9-2) held her own in the Grade 1 Gamely Stakes at Santa Anita. She was running long grass routes at the best tracks in Europe and will like this distance.

Race #8 Picks: 5-8-6-4

In the $300,000, Grade 3 Delaware Oaks for three-year-old fillies at 1 1/16 miles, #5 Balpool (6-1) got bumped around early in the Black-Eyed Susan and it seemed to throw her off her game. She was trailing coming around the far turn but still finished with a rush to finish fourth. She was in excellent form going into that race and we think her best is yet to come. If she can run trouble-free and be near the front early, we think she has enough to beat this field. #8 Miracle (3-1) Was competitive in a pair of Grade 2 stakes races earlier in the year. Then faced a tough customer in Downtown Mischief in a New York-bred stakes in last. She managed to close the gap in the stretch and make it interesting but had to settle for second. This filly is game and is a top contender. #6 Promiseher America (5-1) won the Grade 3 Gazelle Stakes before being in way over her head in the Kentucky Oaks. Now back to realistic competition and if she can repeat her Gazelle race, she will be right there at the finish line.

Race #9 Picks: 1-2-5-4

In this optional claiming/starter allowance race at 5 ½ furlongs, #1 Wild Behavior (7-5) seems to be the class of the field. This winner of three straight with speed figures in the 80s will take the lead early and be hard to catch. We have him on top. #2 John’s Promise (4-1) fits well with this group. When he gets class relief like he is getting today he usually does well. He will be running late and be in contention if the frontrunners falter. #5 W W Springtime (5-2) just got up to win last time at this distance. If he repeats that effort he will be in the mix.
