Delaware Park picks and analysis: June 23, 2023
Live racing at Delaware Park kicks off May 24 and runs through late October.
Once again this year, we will have Delaware Park picks and analysis for every day of live racing at the venerable track.
Today’s card features eight races, and first post is 12:30 EDT.
Race #1 Picks: 3-7-4-1
In this $7500 claiming race at one mile, #3 Kidyounot (9-5) showed brief speed in last before falling back late. Had some good races early this year at Fair Grounds. Now getting a class drop and that early speed should hold with this field. #7 Great Faces (5-2) bobbled at the start and trailed in last. He was running well with better company earlier in the year, and if he is trouble-free, he should be a contender today. #4 Zipper Zapper (8-1) got in a duel and faded in last and could factor into the race today if he doesn’t link up with a horse on the front end.
Race #2 Picks: 7-3-6-5
In this $12,500 maiden claiming race at one mile, #7 Mr. Laoban (5-1) showed speed on the turf in last and is now moving back to dirt. Stretching out on the dirt and getting class relief from his debut. He looks primed to show improvement. #3 El Patojo (5-2) is starting for the second time this year and getting class relief. He showed flashes of speed in maiden races last year but had some racing trouble. If he gets a clean trip today, he will be battling for the top spot. #6 Keranos (4-1) had a decent race two back at Laurel, and if he can repeat the 50 speed-rating, he will be in the mix.
Race #3 Picks: 1-7-4-5
All races are off the turf. Picks are for anticipated entrants.

Race #4 Picks: 6-4-5-2
In this $28,000 N2L claiming race at six furlongs, #6 Bright Forecast (3-2) has been running against better in Florida and has been within striking distance of the winner. He always tries hard, and we have him on top today. #4 Indybound (7-5) is dropping to lowest claiming level in his short career. Trainer Jamie Ness is an expert at dropping to win, and this gelding looks to be in an excellent spot. #5 Oiler (8-1) showed some speed at Parx last year. Sprinting for the second time in a row today and should improve.
Race #5 Picks: 5-8-7-2
All races are off the turf. Picks are for anticipated entrants.
Joe’s Notes
- Thursday was off the turf, as is Friday…
- Jockey Jaime Rodriguez and trainer Mike Gorham teamed up to win consecutive races on Thursday…
Race #6 Picks: 2-8-7-1
In this $10,000 claiming race at one mile and 70 yards, #2 Maythehorsebwithu (4-1) has been inconsistent lately, but if he is on his game, he should be able to top this field. He will take the lead and try to make the others catch him, and we don’t think any other horse in this field will be able to do that. #8 King Cairo (2-1) has the speed figures to be competitive in this event. It is a little concerning that he has faded in most of his route races, but he has the talent to compete here. #7 Kobla Mas (3-1) has run mostly on turf but ran an 86 speed figure in a race taken off the turf in Tampa. However, he is a deep closer and Delaware Park does not favor that type of runner.
Race #7 Picks: 8-5-6-2
All races are off the turf. Picks are for anticipated entrants.
Race #8 Picks: 7-3-5-6
In this $10,000 claiming race for fillies and mares at six furlongs, #7 Illusion of Hope (8-1) will have apprentice Skylar Zaplitny aboard, which gives her a ten-pound weight advantage over the other horses. This will be her second race back this year, and she almost won at this level at Laurel last year. We think Zaplitny will get her first win of 2023 today. #3 Need a Marker (4-1) is taking a class drop after being competitive at the $20,000 claiming level at Laurel. She looks tough in this spot. #5 Chem Major (9-5) won as the favorite in Tampa. Facing a little tougher competition today, but she should be in the mix.
