By Wednesday the Pimlico rhythms have begun to change: Preakness is right around the corner. A second wave of horses arrives, and now the stakes barn is beginning to fill. The first battery of Preakness runners hits the track for a leg-stretching. The media scrum begins to form, moving from target to target in search of news. There’s no live racing, not yet, but the quiet rhythms of the racetrack are starting to give way, even as moments of reflection still occur.
