With three wins since our most recent compilation of the Charles Town trainer rankings — including a 49-1 score with Ellie’s Cork — trainer James W. Casey moved up from fourth to first in ratings through March 20.

Casey, with 10 wins to date, has a total score of 312.65. He leapfrogged last period’s leader Ronney Brown, who is in second with 273.33 points, as well as Kevin Patterson (254.95) and Javier Contreras (235.46).

Our system takes into account wins, win percentage, earnings per start, and wagering return on investment. The trainer leading the colony in each category receives a score of 100 for that category, with other conditioners getting a percentage of that. That would give a trainer leading in all categories a perfect score of 400.

In brief, the rating system rewards those who win often and in the biggest races. We applied the stats to every trainer at Charles Town who’s made at least 20 starts and won at least one race.

Casey is in the top five in all four relevant categories. He leads the colony in earnings per start, his operation generating $4,542 for each start. He also is second locally in wagering return on investment; bettors have received $3.84 for each two-dollar win wager on Casey starters this year, second only to Kristy Gazzier ($4.12) in that category.

Ronney Brown, who leads Charles Town trainers with 20 wins to date and was tops in the last ratings period, checks in in second. In addition to leading in wins, he is fourth in win percentage with a strike rate of 20.83 percent.

Kevin Patterson, winless with four starters since the last period, is in third. He leads the colony with a 30 percent strike rate with six wins from 20 starts. He also is second with with earnings per start of $4,308.

Jeff Runco, who won with seven of 25 starters during the period, jumped up from eighth in the standings last period to fourth today with a score of 238.84. Runco’s 17 wins place him just three behind Brown for the overall wins lead. He is also fifth in earnings per start, his runners generating $3,391.

Javier Contreras (235.46) is just behind Runco in fifth. He is third in win percentage (21.21 percent) and fourth in earnings per start ($3,424).

The report covers racing action through March 20, 2018.
