- What we learned on Maryland Juvenile Stakes dayHere’s what we learned at Laurel Park for Saturday’s Maryland Juvenile and Maryland Juvenile Filly Stakes.
RACE NUMBER | CONTENDERS | COMMENTS |
Race 5 | 1-7-8-3 | Sophomore #1 Blue Paynt (7-2) returned from a bit of a freshening to crush never-won-two rivals last out in perhaps the best performance of her career. In her second start off the bench and already owning a win at this one-mile trip — and with five top-two finishes from five local starts — she looks to be in a good spot to make it two straight… If the pace heats up, #7 Elusive Amelia (4-1) may be in a good spot to take advantage. She should be forwardly placed but not one-two in her first start in seven months; trainer Ness wins at over a 20% clip off layoffs of more than 90 days… Morning line favorite #8 Hashtag Lucky (5-2) makes the trip up I-95 from Laurel and brings rider Toledo along, but we’d like to see a start over the strip before taking short odds… |
Race 6 | 5-7-4-3 | Monster effort last out from #5 Davidic Line (2-1), controlling the pace up front, setting solid fractions, and winning decisively; note that runner-up I Am Redeemed came right back to win a local allowance and is already a PA-bred stakes winner… #7 What’s to Blame (15-1) gave an improved account of himself in last and here makes his third start off a nine-month break. He’ll need to take a big step forward to contend, but he does have competitive races on the page and has won an allowance race, a feat most of his rivals cannot claim… Since switching into the Linder barn, #4 The Big Bluff (3-1) has been first or second in four straight and seems likely to be in the money again today… #3 Pategory One (4-1) is another formful sort, arriving off a win one step down… |
