Call Me Micky J. seeks third stakes win in WV Juvenile

Moscarelli runner-up Jack Carson tries to turn tables

Last Saturday Crystal Veil made it 3-for-3 in the state-bred juvenile stakes ranks when she took down the James and Eleanor Casey Memorial Stakes at Charles Town Races. On Saturday Call Me Micky J. will look to do likewise when he faces three rivals in the $75,000 West Virginia Juvenile.

The seven-furlong test for West Virginia-bred 2-year-olds is carded as the fourth race on the Nov. 7 program, with a scheduled post time of 8:32 p.m.

Owned and trained by John Salzman Jr., Call Me Micky J. has found Charles Town much to his liking. The Sharp Azteca colt has won both of his local starts, taking the Henry Mercer Memorial at 4 ½ furlongs Sept. 19 before stretching out to capture the 6 ½-furlong Vincent Moscarelli Memorial Breeders Classic Oct. 10.

He led throughout both races, winning the Mercer by 2 ¾ lengths and holding off Jack Carson by a half-length in the Moscarelli. Those victories pushed his career record to three wins from six starts and his earnings to $111,730.

Bred by O’Sullivan Farms and purchased for $20,000 as a yearling, Call Me Micky J. also won his debut at Laurel Park in May. Three subsequent stakes tries, including one going long on turf and one in the Bashford Manor at Churchill Downs, yielded no better than a seventh-place finish before finding West Virginia-bred company at Charles Town more welcoming.

Jack Carson has chased him home in both Charles Town stakes and narrowed the gap considerably in their latest meeting.

The Coleswood Farm homebred finished third, six lengths behind Call Me Micky J., in the Mercer. In the Moscarelli, he pursued the leader throughout the latter stages and cut the margin to a half-length while finishing 14 ¼ lengths clear of third-place Dry Martini Again.

Trainer Jeff Runco will again give Arnaldo Bocachica a leg up on the Mitole colt, who has a win, a second, and a third from three starts.

Candyforthegirls brings a different challenge: speed. Trained by Jean Adorno for Patricia Becraft and Cynthia Woods, the Candygram gelding broke his maiden by seven lengths against open company Oct. 3, leading throughout a 4 ½-furlong dash in his first outing with blinkers on. Saturday will mark his first stakes appearance and first attempt beyond that distance.

Dry Martini Again is the field’s only runner with a seven-furlong victory. The Uncle Chuck gelding won his debut at the distance Sept. 25 before finishing a distant third in the Moscarelli. Trainer Kathleen O’Connell adds blinkers for owner George Nyren, with Pedro Cotto Jr. retaining the mount.
