Mid-Atlantic three stars: June 8, 2026

Plenty of racing action took place throughout the Mid-Atlantic this past week.

Here’s a look at the “three stars” of each track:

REGION’S BEST

FIRST STAR: CAIRO SURPRISE. On the same day that Book ’em Danno was formally honored as the king of Jersey-breds at Monmouth Park, Cairo Surprise served notice that he might be the heir apparent. He crushed the field in Sunday’s John J. Reilly Handicap in a performance that was much more dominant than it looks on paper. Sent off as the 1-10 favorite following a dazzling win against Garden Staters on opening day, he sat second in the early stages off of three-time Reilly champion Speaking. Without being asked to do so by Paco Lopez, he stuck his head in front just past the opening-quarter mark. He pulled away from the rest effortlessly, opening up by seven lengths at the top of the lane. He could’ve opened up by even more, but Lopez eased him up in the last eighth, and he crossed the wire under a slow canter. The official margin was 6 1/4 lengths and the final time for six furlongs was 1:10.84, but both of those marks would be significantly more impressive had Lopez asked him for run. The 3-year-old Hope Jones homebred is now 4-for-8 lifetime, having never missed the exacta in his career, with earnings of $181,600. Cal Lynch is the winning conditioner.

SECOND STAR: SUMMER’S COMIN’. The day prior at Monmouth, ten Jersey-bred fillies and mares did battle in the six-furlong Spruce Fir Handicap. Slight favorite Summer’s Comin’ and longshot Jewel of the Ocean battled with each other almost the entire way, but ultimately Summer’s Comin’ edged away and won by a length for her second consecutive win in this race. She’s now 2-for-6 on the year, having won at Tampa Bay Downs in her previous outing, and is 9-for-33 lifetime with earnings of $418,591. Michael Dini is the winning owner and trainer; Francisco Martinez had the winning mount.

THIRD STAR: UNCLE’S GOLD. The feature race on Thursday at Delaware Park was a second-level allowance route at a mile and 70 yards on the grass. Uncle’s Gold, who won the AAA Feed & Tack Turf Classic at Tampa Bay in his previous start, continued his form streak with a neck victory, setting a new track record in the process. He quickly dropped towards the inside from post position three and raced towards the back of the pack behind a contentious pace. He lacked racing room on the far turn and was forced to check sharply when Paco Lopez tried to move him through a non-existent opening on the inside. His class eventually shone through, as he kicked on once clear and rumbled past second choice Pineland to win as the 7-10 choice. He ran the distance in a track-record in 1:38.27 for owner Live Oak Plantation and trainer Mike Trombetta.

LAUREL PARK

FIRST STAR: BELLA QUEEN. Led all the way to pull a mild 5-1 upset in a second-level allowance dirt route on Saturday.

SECOND STAR: JORGE RUIZ. Bella Queen was one of three winners for Ruiz on Saturday.

THIRD STAR: SPENCER TIARA. Crushed a first-level allowance group by 7 1/2 lengths on Friday for her second win in her last three races.

CHARLES TOWN

FIRST STAR: RONNEY BROWN. Trained three winners on Thursday and three more on Friday; he’s opened up a commanding lead in the trainer standings, with 67 wins heading into this week.

SECOND STAR: THELASTSAY. One of Brown’s wins was with this mare, who split horses and drew off to win a second-level allowance dash on Thursday.

THIRD STAR: NOBLE RULING. Shook off an early duel to win a West Virginia-bred allowance sprint on Saturday for his third win in his last five starts.

DELAWARE PARK

FIRST STAR: UNCLE’S GOLD. He could be poised for a return to stakes company off his big win on Thursday.

SECOND STAR: PACO LOPEZ. Had five winners on the Wednesday card, including a sweep of the late pick 4.

THIRD STAR: SOUPER WILLIWAW. Kicked away to win a second-level allowance grass route of her own on Wednesday.

MONMOUTH PARK

FIRST STAR: CAIRO SURPRISE. Dominated the Reilly field without being asked to run; the sky’s the limit.

SECOND STAR: SUMMER’S COMIN’. Showed her heart and class to win the Spruce Fir.

THIRD STAR: LA FROST. Sat a great stalking trip and drew off to crush a first-level allowance field later on the Saturday card.

PARX RACING

FIRST STAR: FIRE PIT. Overcame a poor start to win a second-level allowance sprint on Tuesday.

SECOND STAR: SOUNDSMISCHIEVOUS. Beat a non-winners of two allowance sprint field on Tuesday for her fourth consecutive win.

THIRD STAR: DEVIL’S CAY. Crushed a starter optional claiming field by 12 3/4 lengths on Saturday.
