Closing day for the 2026 Saratoga meet features the Funny Cide and Gio Ponti Stakes in races ten and eleven. While the Funny Cide is restricted to state breds, the Gio Ponti is exclusively for three year olds going a mile on the inner turf. As the last stakes race of the meet, the Gio Ponti carries a field of nine and two main track only entries if the race comes off due to rain. In this evenly matched group of nine runners, the Midlantic gets one last chance against the best here, with the lukewarm 8/1 Doubting Thomas breaking from post six. Carrying the same connections as yesterday’s Disco Partner runner-up Determined Kingdom, this colt by Caravaggio – Allwewantforxmas, by Songandaprayer will hope for a different result and pick up his first win outside of Colonial Downs.Disco

With five career starts, Doubting Thomas has only run at sprint distances and has run four of his races on the Colonial turf course. After winning a restricted maiden in his debut, this Virginia bred won a state bred stakes at second asking last August as a two year old. Doubting Thomas rated in his first try but was able to find speed second time out and go gate to wire at five and a half furlongs. Following a near year long layoff, he then competed at Presque Isle Downs on their artificial dirt surface and came from second to last to place in an open company stakes. This was then followed by another place as the post time favorite back on the Colonial turf course in July, which set him up for a narrow win in the Colonial Turf Dash a month ago. Reverting back to his off the pace running style, Doubting Thomas should be able to adjust to added ground here as he always has more in the tank in the late stretch. This Michael Trombetta trainee has also shown improving speed figures and could be peaking at the right time as he takes on a classy group. Never finishing worse than second, it is clear that Doubting Thomas’s form is good enough to win here if he takes to the added ground. The experienced John Velazquez will make his first start aboard Doubting Thomas who ships up from Laurel Park after recently breezing over their turf course. Despite a tough meet for Midlantic breds, Doubting Thomas can cap it off and make it two in a row after Pennsylvania bred Jean Valjean won yesterday’s Disco Partner. Bred by R. Larry Johnson who is also the owner, Doubting Thomas enters here with $259,700 in career earnings which places him only behind Chummers in this field.
