Robbs, Perez take Big T titles

The Timonium meet which wrapped up September 4 wasn’t the “John and Gina Robb Invitational.” But at times it sure felt like it was.

The husband-and-wife team, whose homebreds race under the No Guts No Glory Farm banner, are both trainers and finished one-two in the Big T trainer standings. For good measure, the operation’s go-to rider, Xavier Perez, was the leading jockey.

Perez started fast and held the meet lead entering the second of the stand’s two weekends. But after Axel Concepcion won two on Saturday, he’d poked his head in front with eight wins to Perez’s seven. Perez responded by winning with all four of his Sunday mounts and his first Saturday ride, a five-race win streak that propelled him to 12 wins and the title.

Concepcion finished with eight wins, good for second, after being shut out on Sunday. Jeiron Barbosa and Carlos Lopez finished with six wins each.

Apprentice Martina Rojas was the surprise of the meet, winning five times from 17 starts, including a riding triple on Sept. 1. She has won 45 races this year from 264 starts, and while she’s been riding primarily at Presque Isle Downs in recent months, her upcoming schedule includes entries at Delaware, Pimlico, and Penn National.

Two other riders who enjoyed productive meets in limited starts were Tais Lyapustina and Alexander Crispin. Lyapustina, who entered the meet with 10 wins on the season, won with four of 10 starters, while Crispin, riding primarily for the Robbs, won with four of five.

Speaking of the Robbs, John started fast, winning three times on opening day, and didn’t slow down much en route to nine wins from 27 runners to lead all trainers. One of his to keep an eye on is Dats Mr. Mo, owned by DAT Racing Stable. The Uncle Mo colt dead-heated for the win in a second-level allowance Sept. 3 in a sharp effort and now has three wins from six career outings.

Gina Robb sent out a remarkable six winners from just 12 starters, all on the second weekend. Five of those were maiden-breaking scores.

Among horses, two runners posted two wins during the meet. Anonymously, ridden by Lyapustina for trainer Jose Corrales, won a pair, including the fifth on closing day, and Here and Nofurther also won twice for trainer Kieron Magee. Carlos Lopez was in the irons both times.

The meet’s stakes went to Response Time, who won the Timonium Distaff, and Sweet Soddy J, winner of the Timonium Juvenile under an astute Jeiron Barbosa ride. Hamilton Smith trains Response Time for Mens Grille Racing; the five-year-old earned her first stakes win, and, like Sweet Soddy J, was ridden by Barbosa. Sweet Soddy J, trained by Ray Ginter for Built Wright Stables, is two-for-two in his brief career.
