- What we learned on Maryland Juvenile Stakes dayHere’s what we learned at Laurel Park for Saturday’s Maryland Juvenile and Maryland Juvenile Filly Stakes.
RACE NUMBER | CONTENDERS | COMMENTS |
Race 5 | 3-6-7-5 | Morning line fave and top choice #3 Billieanne (9-5) certainly has the look of a horse moving in the right direction. The Patricia Farro trainee romped against open first-level allowance horses last out for her second career win in eight outings and off three straight strong outings looks to be a handful in here… The little freshening seems to have paid off for #6 Solid Gold Dancer (8-1), who rallied smartly to just miss — the first time she’s passed horses in the lane. Look for another good effort today… #7 Lula’s Roadrunner (9-2) ran credibly in her first try in Ron Dandy’s barn but was well beaten by our top choice… #5 Flashy Too (3-1) had to drop into the claiming ranks to break her maiden, and that came on the synthetic, but a couple of earlier dirt tries weren’t bad at all… |
Race 9 | 3-8-9-5 | There are plenty of reasons not to like #3 Caribbean (6-1) in this spot, but we’re inclined to take a swing if we can get reasonable odds. On the negative side, this Speightstown gelding will be navigating two turns for his first start in almost nine months and first over a Parx strip that some horses don’t take to. He’s also been training at Laurel Park, which, of course, has been closed to workers for the last 10 or so days, so he could be a bit short here. On the plus side: he’ll be making his first start off the claim by Lacey Gaudet, and she does well first off the claim, and this guy projects as the controlling speed. If he’s right and ready, he may be tough to reel in… All that said, the most likely winner here is #8 Magic Michael (9-5). The Jamie Ness trainee is a neck away from being 9-for-9 at Parx, has won two straight, and two back scored in the G3 Greenwood Cup… Just an OK effort by #9 Senior Investment (5-1) last out but he has won at the level… #5 Dontmesawithme (5-1) keeps churning out good races and defeated similar three back… |
