Saratoga’s 9th race on September 5 is Grade 1, $350,000 7-furlong Spinaway Stakes for two year old fillies. The Spinaway is one of the oldest stakes races in North America, dating back to 1881, and is named for the filly, Spinaway, who raced in 1880. Spinaway was incredibly prolific as a broodmare, and her line includes present day stallion Giant’s Causeway. This stakes race will be contested by six qualified fillies, with Tonasah being a Pennsylvania-bred.

Tonasah has already had one close call at Saratoga, losing a stretch battle to Just Wicked in the Grade 2 Adirondack earlier this meet. The connections of trainer Todd Pletcher and jockey Javier Castellano have their sights set on a win. Owned by StarLadies Racing and bred by Smart Angle, LLP, this filly is coming off a forty-nine second four furlong breeze on August 29th. She looks primed for a maximum effort. At morning line odds of 7/2, this daughter of Malibu Moon – Quanah County, by Valid Expectations, has to be taken seriously.
