Mid-Atlantic three stars: July 6, 2026

Plenty of racing action took place throughout the Mid-Atlantic this past week.

Here’s a look at the “three stars” of each track:

REGION’S BEST

FIRST STAR: GERRARDS CROSS. Monmouth Park’s feature race on Sunday, their lone day of racing on the week after the Friday and Saturday programs were abandoned because of the heat, was the Monmouth County Stakes for 3-year-old fillies at 5 1/2 furlongs on the grass. Gerrards Cross, most recently second in the Stormy Blues Stakes at Laurel Park last out, broke through to win by 2 1/4 lengths. She established a clear early lead under Cipriano Gil and set the pace while Spinelli tracked her in second. She kicked clear and opened up on them in the stretch, hitting the wire in 1:04.55 over the firm track. Spinelli held second, while Tap Into Grace got up for third over favored Carolyncaroline. The winner improved to 3-for-6 lifetime and 1-for-3 on the season, with this being her first win since last July’s Colleen Stakes on this track. She’s a Florida-bred homebred for James Chicklo trained by Kathleen O’Connell.

SECOND STAR: FASTER GATOR. A field of older male sprinters met in the featured event at Charles Town on Saturday, an open allowance race at seven furlongs. Despite a seventh-place finish in the Maryland Sprint Stakes last out, Faster Gator went off as the 1-5 favorite in the five-horse field. He lived up to expectations with a 1 1/4-length win. Under Jevian Toledo, he worked out a trip pressing longshot early leader Ozone in the two-path. On the far turn, Faster Gator drew closer to the leader, but Ozone dug in and wouldn’t let the favorite go by without a fight. Faster Gator took command at the top of the stretch and held off the late rally of Jubawithatwist to secure the victory. He ran the distance on a muddy track in 1:23.52 for his first win of the year, and his first victory since capturing last year’s Steel Valley Sprint Stakes at Mahoning Valley. He’s owned by Richard Burnsworth and Dunn Brothers Racing LLC and trained by Anthony Farrior.

THIRD STAR: EFF THIRTY FIVE. The Sunday feature at Colonial Downs was a third-level allowance route for older males at 1 1/8 miles on the grass. Eff Thirty Five rallied from last to win at 5-1. Longshot Regalo, a fellow Brittany Russell trainee, and favorites Cugino and Air Recruit set moderate early fractions. They clicked off a first quarter-mile fraction in 24.21 seconds and an opening half-mile split of 47.77 seconds. As they rounded the second and final turn, Sheldon Russell began to ask Eff Thirty Five for run, moving him up the rail. In the stretch, Sheldon was ready to move his mount towards the center of the track, but found a seam one path from the rail and moved his mount through. He wore down Air Recruit in the final strides for the victory, covering the distance in 1:46.83. He’s now 2-for-2 on the year, following a win in the Alphabet Soup Handicap at Penn National last out, and 7-for-20 lifetime, with career earnings of over $300,000. He’s owned by the Elkstone Group LLC of Stuart Grant.
