For Jeff Runco, a changing of the equine guard
With veterans retiring, young horses the focus
Having retired millionaires Muad’dib and Coastal Mission this year, trainer Jeff Runco is living through a changing of the equine guard. Fortunately, Ryan’s Run appears primed to step in.
The three-year-old West Virginia-bred has won his first four starts, including two stakes, and Runco is preparing to test him against open company in the $500,000 Robert Hilton Memorial at Charles Town Aug. 28. Ryan’s Run breezed a half-mile in 48 2/5 seconds Aug. 12, the fastest of seven workers at the distance that day at Charles Town.

“He had a really nice workout [on Aug. 12]. I really like the way he did it,” Runco said during the Aug. 14 Midlantic Racing Today podcast. “We decided that spot next. We’re gonna point towards the Robert Hilton. We’re gonna see how he does from there. That’ll be a step up for him against open horses. But no better place to try than your own home track.”
The timing is fitting for Runco, who has spent decades developing young horses into stakes winners while building one of the most accomplished training records in American racing.

Runco has 4,952 victories from 23,036 starts, putting him 11th all-time among trainers and one win from joining the sport’s top 10. His horses have earned more than $72.5 million.
Yet milestones don’t occupy much of his attention.
“When we hit 4,000, it was great,” Runco said. “It’ll be great [to reach 5,000]. It’ll be a great feat, no doubt. But it’s not something that’s on my mind a lot. When we get closer, maybe it will be, but now I’m keeping my mind on Ryan’s Run and those kind of things.”
That focus has been shaped by a partnership that has lasted for decades. Runco’s wife, Susan, is an integral part of the operation, and the couple runs their racing business under the Coleswood Farm name.
While Runco spends much of his time at the track, Susan oversees the farm, breeding operation and broodmares. The division of responsibilities is less a separation than a collaboration.
“We work together on different things all the time about where we’re running the horses,” Runco said. “I bounce stuff off her constantly. I say, ‘What do you think about this?’ And she’ll bounce stuff off me. … It works great. It’s been a great combination.”
Their success has also been built with owners willing to invest in horses and trust the Runco team to develop them. Among them are David Raim and Huntertown Farm (Heinz and Eric Steinmann).
“We’ve grown with these owners over the years, and we’ve got a great relationship with them,” Runco said. “They know what we do. They know how hard me and Susan work to try to keep things going.”
That relationship was particularly rewarding with Muad’dib, owned by Raim, and Coleswood’s Coastal Mission. They both retired this year as millionaires. Coastal Mission also was a Grade 3 winner, while Muad’dib finished in the top three in the Sam Huff West Virginia Breeders’ Classic five times, including a pair of wins.
“They’re so rare,” Runco said. “Him and Coastal Mission both. … They were just the highlight of my career.”
Now the challenge is finding the next ones.
Perhaps his top current runner among older horses is Duncan Idaho, the one-turn king of Charles Town and a full brother to Muad’dib. Runco also said his stable has a promising group of two-year-olds, including horses owned by Raim, and that developing young stock remains the heart of what he does.
“We’re all about bringing along young horses, trying to get allowance and stake horses,” he said. “It’s tough to do. We work hard at it.”
The three-year-old Ryan’s Run represents the latest opportunity, but Runco isn’t ready to compare him with the horses who came before.
“He’s got a little bit of a different personality, a different kind of horse,” he said. “But his talent level has shown pretty darn good.”
For now, that’s enough. The next generation is coming along, and Runco is doing what he has always done: taking it one horse, and one race, at a time.
