Five dozen nominated to Shine Again

Highlights Timonium meet

More than five dozen fillies and mares have been nominated to the $75,000 Shine Again Stakes to take place Aug. 29 at Timonium.

The Shine Again, which is contested at the two-turn distance of 6 ½ furlongs, is limited to distaffers that have never won an open stakes race. Entries will be drawn on Sunday, Aug. 23.

The 61 nominees include several runners who have placed in open stakes or have won restricted stakes.

Top nominees in the former category include Godolphin LLC’s Amalfi Drive, trained by Michael Stidham, Conquerthosewecan, and Kinzie Queen. Amalfi Drive recently was second in the Obeah at Delaware Park and the finished fourth, beaten just two lengths, in the Maggie L. Walker Stakes at Colonial Downs.

Conquerthosewecan, a Sycamore Hall Thoroughbreds homebred trained by Brittany Russell, was most recently second by a neck in the Love Sign Stakes at Colonial.

Kinzie Queen, trained by Greg Compton for himself and John Holleman, finished second in last year’s Grade 2 Black-Eyed Susan and Grade 3 Delaware Oaks.

Restricted stakes winners nominated to the Shine Again include Irish Jig, Modo, Mopo, Petty Perfect, Silent Rule, and Spring Dancer.

The three-year-old Irish Jig, trained by Kelly Deiter for herself and Cathy Denelsbeck, has won twice in four career starts. Last time out she closed late to win the Miss Disco at Colonial Downs over hard-hitting rivals Slewperstitus and Just Philtored.

Trained by Kinnon LaRose for Joel Politi, Modo won a state-restricted stake last time out at Lone Star Park, while Mopo did the same two back on the Laurel Park lawn. Mopo is trained by Phil Capuano for Mopo Racing.

Another intriguing nominee, perhaps not likely to enter, is Petty Perfect. The Kristy Petty trainee won last fall’s West Virginia Cavada Breeders’ Classic by 5 ½ lengths but seems more likely to return to state-bred company in the Sadie Hawkins the night before the Shine Again.

Discreet Ops won last year’s Shine Again for owner Chip Reed and trainer Ben Feliciano. Carlos Lopez was in the irons.

The Timonium race meet kicks off Aug. 28 and runs through Labor Day, Sept. 7.
