Incredibolt’s win puts him squarely in Derby picture

Incredibolt put himself squarely in the Kentucky Derby picture with his victory in Saturday’s Virginia Derby. Indeed, with the race’s 50 Derby points to the winner, he’s now tied for the top spot in Derby points.
Incredibolt and Paladin both have 60 Derby points to lead all runners, and six others have 50 or more. Most years 40+ will ensure a spot in Louisville.

It also put young trainer Riley Mott in the spotlight. Mott, the son of Hall of Famer Bill Mott, has not had a Kentucky Derby starter to date in a career which began in 2022.
Bill Mott has had 14 Derby starters, winning twice. He won in 2019 with Country House, who was put up after the disqualification of first-past-the-post Maximum Security, and again last year with Sovereignty.
In fact, Riley Mott is the only trainer who has no prior Derby starters with a horse currently in the top 10 by points. Among the other horses in the top 10 by points, the trainers are:

- Gustavo Delgado, The Puma (50 points): 3 prior Derby starters, 1 win.
- Mark Casse, Silent Tactic (50): 11 prior Derby starters, 0 wins.
- Todd Pletcher, Class President (50) and Grittiness (36): 65 prior Derby starters, 2 wins.
- Brad Cox, Commandment (50): 12 prior Derby starters, 1 win.
- Bob Baffert, Potente (50): 35 prior Derby starters, 6 wins
- Steve Asmussen, Chip Honcho (39): 28 prior Derby starters, 0 wins.
