Mid-Atlantic three stars: December 8, 2025
Plenty of racing action took place throughout the Mid-Atlantic this past week.
Here’s a look at the “three stars” of each track:
REGION’S BEST

FIRST STAR: JUST PHILTORED. On Saturday at Laurel Park, Just Philtored took a step towards a potential Maryland-bred year-end championship with a 1 ¾-length win in the Maryland Juvenile Filly Stakes. Looking for redemption after a third-place finish in the Smart Halo Stakes last out, she was sent off as the 2-1 second choice in a competitive five-horse field. Her chief rivals included Maryland Million Lassie winner Slewperstitius and Smart Halo winner Doc’s Miracle. J.G. Torrealba rated Just Philtored off the pace in the early stages, having her sit second while Parx invader Project Maximus set the tempo. As they rounded the turn, Project Maximus faded, Just Philtored took command, and neither Slewperstitus nor Doc’s Miracle could make an impact. Just Phitored covered seven furlongs in 1.26.02, for her fourth career win and third in stakes company. She previously won the Keswick Stakes and the Dolley Madison Stakes at Colonial Downs over the summer. She’s by Great Notion and out of the uber-prolific broodmare Slow and Steady. Red White and Blue Racing LLC and London Reid Thoroughbreds are the winning owners; Mike Trombetta is the winning trainer.
SECOND STAR: CODE OF SILENCE. Two races prior, a wide-open field of nine 2-year-old males did battle in the Maryland Juvenile Stakes. Off a come-from-behind win in his maiden-breaking effort last out, Code of Silence was the 9-5 favorite. He made his backers sweat, but he ultimately prevailed by a neck with a last-to-first rally. Angel Cruz began to ask him for his best on the turn, and he was ultimately forced into the center of the track. Despite racing widest of all, he continued to make up ground in the lane, and put his head in front in the final strides. G Q Worthy and Tartabull, who both came from off the pace as well, finished second and third, respectively. Tartabull’s trainer, Chad Summers, lodged a claim of foul after Code of Silence lugged in in the race’s waning moments, but it was disallowed. The winner is by Murmur Farm’s Blofeld and was bred by the Holts and the Palumbos. He’s owned by Mount Peru Farm and trained by Tim Keefe.
THIRD STAR: DWELLING LEGACY. Sunday’s feature at Laurel was a second-level sprint for fillies and mares at six furlongs. Dwelling Legacy’s form didn’t look great on paper, but the betting public believed in the trainer/jockey dream team of Gary Capuano and Yedsit Hazlewood and sent her away as the 5-2 favorite. She lived up to the hype, taking control of the pace from the outside post and opening up a clear lead. Howler made a move up the inside to challenge the leader, but Dwelling Legacy fended her off and won by three lengths. She ran the distance in 1.04.43 to improve to 3-for-9 on the season for owner Pinochle Partners LLC.
LAUREL PARK
FIRST STAR: JUST PHILTORED. She’s already a three-time stakes winner as she continues to add to the Slow and Steady legacy.
SECOND STAR: CODE OF SILENCE. He’s made it interesting both times, but he’s now a back-to-back winner.
THIRD STAR: DWELLING LEGACY. Capuano and Hazlewood team up for another big winner.
CHARLES TOWN
FIRST STAR: TICO GRANDE. Opened up a clear lead late and just held off 1-5 favorite Zachamundo to win a West Virginia-bred allowance sprint on Wednesday for his fourth consecutive victory.
SECOND STAR: TALKIN PHAROAH. Drew off to win a starter optional claiming dash on Wednesday in gate-to-wire fashion for his seventh win of the year in 10 starts.
THIRD STAR: JUAN BELISARIO. Rode three winners on Wednesday and three more on Saturday to continue a strong apprenitce season.
PARX RACING
FIRST STAR: CENTRE COURT CHAMP. Lasted through pace pressure to win a second-level sprint for fillies and mares on Monday by 3 1/2 lengths.
SECOND STAR: QUASI WARRIOR. Drew off under urging to win a Pennsylvania-bred sprint on Wednesday to improve to 3-for-4 lifetime; it wouldn’t be a shock to see him in Pennsylvania-bred stakes company next year.
THIRD STAR: I FEELUCKY TONITE. Lasted through an early duel to win a first-level sprint on Wednesday to continue a busy year; he’s 5-for-16 on the year, with five more runner-up finishes.
