Mid-Atlantic three stars: May 4, 2026

Plenty of racing action took place throughout the Mid-Atlantic this past week.

Here’s a look at the “three stars” of each track:

REGION’S BEST

Catalytic proved best in the Saturday feature at Laurel Park. Jim McCue/MJC

FIRST STAR: CATALYTIC. The Saturday feature at Laurel Park was a third-level allowance route for older males at 1 1/16 miles, which served as one of the races in the National Thoroughbred League series. Catalytic spent the winter running against the likes of Knightsbridge and Skippylongstocking, but found this field to his liking. He rated off of early leader J D Factor in the two-path, then made him move on the far turn and poked a nose midway on the final bend. He pulled clear in the stretch while the other favorites, National Law and Worcester, gave futile chase, and won by 3 1/2 lengths while going the distance in 1:44.13 over a fast track. This was the fourth win in his 17-race career, and his first since last July at Gulfstream Park, boosting his career earnings to $397,185. He’s owned by Tami Bobo, trained by Brittany Russell, and ridden by Sheldon Russell.

SECOND STAR: HAILEYSFIRSTNOTION. Making his first start since a third-place effort in the Maryland Million Sprint last October, Haileysfirstnotion got right back into peak form with a sharp 7 3/4-length win in a third-level allowance sprint on Friday. He went off as the 2-5 favorite in the four-horse field, and promptly made the lead from the rail under Jose Vargas. He shook off pace pressure from Don’t Wait Up and pulled away confidently, stopping the clock for 1:09.19 for six furlongs. He’s now 6-for-12 lifetime with earnings of $263,860, and has missed the board only once in his career. He’s a homebred for Dan Crowley and trainer Gary Capuano’s Non Stop Stable.

THIRD STAR: JULEE’S LEGACY. This 5-year-old mare has been perfect since arriving at Charles Town from Florida earlier this year. She picked up her biggest win yet on Friday, taking an open allowance dash by 3 1/4 lengths. Breaking from the inside post in the five-horse ensemble, she broke on top, opened up a clear early lead quickly, and never looked back, with Double Airo chasing her in second throughout. The winner’s now 3-for-3 on the West Virginia bullring oval, and is now 8-for-14 lifetime, with six of those wins coming within her last seven starts. She’s owned by Robert Proulx, trained by Michael Jones, and ridden by Jeiron Barbosa.

LAUREL PARK

FIRST STAR: CATALYTIC. Two years after he was well-beaten in the Derby, he delivered on this first Saturday in May.

SECOND STAR: HAILEYSFIRSTNOTION. Started off his campaign, which he hopes will culminate in another Maryland Million Sprint bid, on a winning note.

THIRD STAR: JEAN VALJEAN. Got the job done in his second start off a year-plus layoff, rallying late to win a third-level allowance sprint on the grass on Friday.

CHARLES TOWN

FIRST STAR: JULEE’S LEGACY. She’s taken to Charles Town well; how long will she stay perfect here?

SECOND STAR: JUBAWITHATWIST. Returned off a nearly year-long layoff in sharp fashion on Friday, making a well-timed move to win an open allowance sprint; he’s now 10-for-17 lifetime.

THIRD STAR: HIGH PAF. Off a similarly long break as Jubawithatwist, she broke on top and never looked back in a second-level allowance sprint earlier on the Friday program.

PARX RACING

FIRST STAR: YEDSIT HAZLEWOOD. Rode four winners on Tuesday and is now in second in the standings with 53 winners.

SECOND STAR: SWEET LAURA. Made a mid-race move and drew away impressively to win a second-level allowance route on Saturday; she’s now won three of her last six races and has hit the board nine consecutive times.

THIRD STAR: LUCKY DUDE. Rallied up the rail to take a first-level allowance route on Monday for his fourth in in his last six starts.
