FASIG-TIPTON: 2020 YEARLING SALE BY THE NUMBERS
The annual Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Fall Yearling Sale takes place Monday and Tuesday in Timonium. As with, well, everything else, things are different. Among them: this year’s yearling sale takes place immediately after the rescheduled Preakness Stakes, won in thrilling fashion on Saturday by Swiss Skydiver.
We’ve crunched some of the numbers to give you a (statistical) sense of what’s happening in the sale. If you’re looking for a more narrative take:
MARYLAND STATE OF MIND
Prior to outs, there are more yearlings bred in Maryland in the sale than in any other state. Indeed, Maryland-breds account for more than 36% of the hips on offer, followed by New York, Pennsylvania, and Kentucky. The list:
|STATE||HIPS ON OFFER|
- Knicks Go favored in Pegasus tiltLikely horse of the year Knicks Go is favored in what will be the final race of his career, Saturday’s G1 Pegasus World Cup.
As the Mid-Atlantic goes, so goes the yearling sale. Or something like that. Of the top 11 sires by progeny offered (prior to outs), all but one stand in the Mid-Atlantic. That one is the promising Laoban, who’s in New York.
The list also includes some who haven’t had runners yet — like Divining Rod and Holy Boss — as well as others with runners, including the veteran Maryland-based sire Great Notion.
|PEACE AND JUSTICE||13|
WHO’S YOUR MOMMY’S DADDY?
The list of damsires includes numerous names familiar for their national exploits: Stormy Atlantic, Mineshaft, Giant’s Causeway, and old friend Malibu Moon among them. But the king of ’em all remains longtime Maryland stalwart Not for Love, who is the damsire of 19 on offer here (prior to outs).
|NOT FOR LOVE||19|
|DANCE WITH RAVENS||7|
|TALE OF THE CAT||6|
|STREET CRY (IRE)||6|
|LEMON DROP KID||6|
|MORE THAN READY||6|
COLOR ME BAY
Bay is the most popular color at the sale, while grey/roan is by far the least. No surprise there.
- Victor Carrasco: “All about the right horse”With Laurel Park about to hold its first stakes of the year, no local rider is hotter than Victor Carrasco, who is set to ride two stakes favorites.
