FASIG-TIPTON: 2021 YEARLING SALE BY THE NUMBERS

The Fasig-Tipton Midlantic fall yearling sale kicks off October 4, with the sale of Hips 1-200. The following day, the remaining hips will go through the ring.
Last year’s sale — taking place amid pandemic conditions immediately after the rescheduled Preakness — was a bit of an odd bird, so it should be interesting to see how the market responds this time around. Certainly, the folks at Keeneland were happy with what they experienced during their September yearling sale.
We’ve crunched some of the numbers to give you a (statistical) sense of what’s happening in the sale. If you’re looking for a more narrative take, check out: Fasig-Tipton sale hoping for happy median.
WHERE YA FROM?
While the two-year-old sale is typically rife with Kentucky-breds, the Midlantic yearling sale stays a little closer to home. Maryland-breds are most prominent, with horses bred in New York and Pennsylvania also outnumbering the Bluegrass State. The list:

SIRE POWER
To a significant extent, new sires and sires standing in the Mid-Atlantic will tell the tale. If the market likes ’em, the sale will thrive. If not, well, then not.
Eight of the 11 stallions to sire at least nine horses entered in the sale stand in Maryland, so perceptions of those stallions will have an outsized impact. That Maryland group includes newcomers Hoppertunity, Irish War Cry, and Long River, all of whose eldest are yearlings, as well as Divining Rod and Madefromlucky, who are first and third, respectively, among the region’s first-crop sires. Holy Boss, who is second regionally among first-crop sires, has three entered.

The damsire list does include a number of prominent national times, among them the late Malibu Moon, Lemon Drop Kid, Awesome Again, and Hard Spun.
