Plenty of racing action took place throughout the Mid-Atlantic this past week.

Here’s a look at the “three stars” of each track:

REGION’S BEST

FIRST STAR: MISCHIEF IN MOTION. Laurel Park hosted a trio of stakes races on the grass on a drizzly Saturday. The first was the All Along Stakes for older fillies and mares at 1 1/8 miles. Mischief in Motion won it by a half-length in a 25-1 upset. She made the early lead under Angel Cruz and opened up a clear lead, while fellow longshots Shore War and and So Darn Pretty raced in close attendance without applying direct pressure. The three favorites raced further behind mild fractions, including a first half-mile in 49.65 seconds and three-quarters of a mile in 1:14.87. As they turned for home, Mischief in Motion opened up on them, extending her lead to four lengths. While Awesome Czech and favored Greyosh made up ground late, it wasn’t enough, and Mischief in Motion held on to win as the biggest longshot in the six-horse field. It was her second career stakes win, following a victory in last September’s Christiana Stakes at Delaware Park, and improved her overall record to 4-for-12 lifetime. She ran the distance on a grass track initially labeled “good” in 1:51.43 for owner Live Oak Plantation and trainer Mike Trombetta.

SECOND STAR: COAST HIGHWAY. Graham Motion and Jorge Ruiz are always a dangerous combination on the Laurel grass, and they teamed up to win Saturday’s Laurel Futurity with Coast Highway. He raced in the center of the track off a slow pace, while Fullcup and Bishop Moon set modest fractions. He made his move on the far turn and was bumped by Broadcast, but pressed on and continued to close ground in the stretch. He moved slightly in the stretch, while Fullcup, two paths to his inside, lugged out, causing Howard’s Hope, racing between those two horses, to fall. Coast Highway battled on as the field approached the wire and got up by a head, with Broadcast second. Fullcup crossed the wire third, but was disqualified to sixth for causing the spill, elevating Bishop Moon to the show spot. Howard’s Hope walked off the track, while his jockey, Jose Lezcano, was transported to a local hospital for precautionary X-rays on his shoulder. The Amerman Racing LLC-owned winner ran 1 1/16 miles on the grass, now labeled “yielding,” in 1:48.38.

THIRD STAR: HIDDEN OVERTURE. The stakes race in between the aforementioned two was the Selima Stakes, featuring 2-year-old fillies traveling 1 1/16 miles. Hidden Overture, who broke her maiden in an off-the-grass affair on debut last out, proved she’s just as capable on grass. She raced off the pace in the clear, was asked for run while racing three-wide on the final turn, and took a clear lead in the stretch. While she did not respond well to left-handed encouragement and swerved out in the stretch, she straightened herself out once Julien Pimentel switched his crop to the right hand, and the filly held on for a three-quarter length win. Homeawayfromhome closed for second, while Sea Isle City finished third. The winner ran the distance on a course labeled “good” but taking on water in 1:47.02 for owners Hidden Brook Farm and Golden Lion Racing and trainer Brittany Russell.

LAUREL PARK

FIRST STAR: MISCHIEF IN MOTION. Took early control and never looked back for an All Along upset.

SECOND STAR: COAST HIGHWAY. Overcame slow fractions to prevail in the Laurel Futurity.

THIRD STAR: HIDDEN OVERTURE. She’s already a winner on both grass and dirt in her two-race career.

CHARLES TOWN

FIRST STAR: MALIBU YEARS. Earned her fourth win in her last five races on Saturday, rallying four-wide to win a second-level allowance sprint.

SECOND STAR: GIMMETHATSUGAR. Set the pace and showed heart to hold on and win a first-level allowance route on Thursday.

THIRD STAR: CULMINATE. Pressed the pace, opened up, and held on to win a first-level allowance sprint later on the Saturday card, earning his third win in his last four starts.
