Winslow wires ’em for notable win
Gives owner, trainer third wins of the day

Winslow was anything but slow (but did win) in Friday’s sixth at Laurel Park, zipping to a maiden-breaking victory that gave owners Mens Grille Racing – David and Lori Hughes’s racing operation – their third win of the day.
“We’ve done two wins before but never done three,” said David Hughes afterwards. “It’s always good to win. You’ve got to win sometimes in this game.”

Mens Grille’s wins came with two runners trained by Jerry Robb – Winslow and, at Delaware Park, Cupid’s Choice – and with the Hamilton Smith-trained Celtic Harp, who won an off-the-turf allowance one race prior to Winslow’s victory.
Winslow had pressed the pace of 3-10 favorite Grind It Out, a $325,000 Vekoma colt, before tiring late to finish third in his debut September 3 at Colonial Downs. Today jockey Xavier Perez was taking no prisoners.
Perez had Winslow in action from the jump, quickly taking the lead and widening at each call to win by five lengths in 1:12.35 for six furlongs on a fast main track. First-time starter Sip of Manhattan chased throughout to be second at 11-1, and Side Hug finished third.
Winslow paid $6.00 to win as the lukewarm favorite in a field of nine two-year-olds. The exacta returned $39.70 on a one-dollar wager.
Winslow is a colt by Maclean’s Music out of the stakes-placed Bernardini mare Sherini, a two-time winner who finished third in the 2018 Ladies Handicap at Aqueduct. Her two wins came at 1 1/16 miles and 1 1/8 miles.
The Hugheses paid $65,000 to obtain Winslow as a two-year-old in training at the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic sale this past May.
“I liked the horse because Maclean’s Music, the sire, is fast,” David Hughes said. “The dam won long at Saratoga, and I’ve had McLean’s Musics that can go, like, five furlongs, but they stop. When I saw the pairing of this and the dam, I said, ‘This looks pretty good, and hopefully we get something.’ And we like the look of the horse.”
The win was also one of three on the day, from four starters, for the Robb barn. He also sent out his and wife Gina’s homebred Marriedtothegame to win a starter-optional claimer at Delaware with Daniel Centeno in the irons.
