Plenty of racing action took place throughout the Mid-Atlantic this past week.

Here’s a look at the “three stars” of each track:

REGION’S BEST

FIRST STAR: BURNHAM SQUARE. The biggest day of the Colonial Downs summer season took place on Saturday, when a field of eight older males went postward in the 1 1/4-mile Arlington Million Stakes on the grass. Burnham Square earned his fourth stakes victory of the year, and his first career grade 1 win, by a half-length. He raced off the pace in the two-path for most of the early stage, while longshot Layabout set the moderate early pace. Burnham Square began to move after the leader on the final turn and briefly poked a nose in front at the top of the lane. Gran Oriente and Layabout fought back gamely to his inside, but Burnham Square proved to be too tough and classy, and he pulled clear in the final sixteenth for the victory. He ran the distance in 2:00.80 and improved to 7-for-15 lifetime with career earnings of $2,884,244. He’s an Ian Wilkes-trained homebred for Whitham Thoroughbreds LLC.

SECOND STAR: GIMME A NOTHER. One race prior, fillies and mares traveled 1 3/16 miles on the Colonial lawn in the Beverly D. Stakes. Eatontown Stakes winner Gimme a Nother put another notch in her belt with an exciting neck victory. Achieve made the early lead and set very moderate fractions, getting the first quarter-mile in 24.77 seconds and the first half-mile in 49.34 seconds. As they turned for home, Achieve still looked strong on the lead, while Gimme a Nother, who went off as the 8-5 favorite, was being scrubbed on for her best. Gimme a Nother kicked it into gear in the last sixteenth and wore down the early leader, covering the distance in 1:54.28 in the process. This is the third consecutive graded stakes win for the South Africa-bred mare, having also captured the John Mabee Stakes at Del Mar last year. She’s owned by Newstead Stable LLC, trained by Graham Motion, and ridden by John Velazquez.

THIRD STAR: SUPERCHARGER. The Secretariat Stakes, also held at Colonial on Saturday, went to Cherie DeVaux trainee Supercharger. He stumbled at the start, but quickly recovered and raced on the rail towards the back of the pack. He was flushed into the two-path on the far turn, but at least had a pace to close into, as early leader Conducted went the first quarter-mile in 23.40 seconds and the opening half in 47.68 seconds. In the stretch, Supercharger remained a few lengths off the lead while favored Alpyland and Conducted dueled with each other, but their strides soon began to swarm in, and Supercharger went the best of the closers. He made his stakes debut a winning one, and has now won three races in a row, with his previous two wins coming at Churchill Downs. He was bred by Hall of Fame trainer Ron McAnally, along with his wife Debbie, and is owned by C R K Stable LLC. Manny Franco rode the winner, who ran 1 1/16 miles in 1:41.24.
